Memories were supposed to be sweet to a teenager, they weren't supposed to be bitter. The taste of remembering the moments that had occurred over a year ago brought this clenching sensation in her stomach.

The soft sunlight coming through the green vines, the sound of the waves moving in the distance and the smell of the ocean were filling Melanie's senses.

She didn't want to remember but she did. She remembered every little things.

From the moment she woke up to a bright day with an excited brother who got her a gift to the moment she learnt of the accident that had destroyed her life. Melanie was never the same after those tragic events and even if she would forget about it, they would find sooner or later.

MELANIE was sitting on her bed, that was a week before the accident, she was on her phone scrolling away her boredom.

She didn't have anything to do, her mothers were out and her brother was working in his room, the 18 year old boy's birthday had been 2 days ago.

Melanie had gotten her brother a new gaming console and a few books. Every year he would say that her gifts were getting better each time. She would always laugh at that and say that 'his gifts never changed so he couldn't say anything about hers'.

Melanie knew he was joking around and that was one of the things she loved about him, the comedic relief of the family. Matt wasn't always the best at talking about his feelings so he would cover it up with jokes and laughter. He knew that Melanie would find out, she always did.

Matt hated how his sister would always understand him more than his friends. He hated how everytime something was wrong she would know and look at him with an expression.

Melanie didn't know that he thought so, she just always thought that her brother would look different or seem to go through something. She would always notice little things her brother would say or do, how his voice would change around a few people and how he would slump his shoulder whenever he saw a certain person.

Of course she was his sister, sisters always know whenever something was wrong with their brothers, call it siblings bond but Melanie wasn't sure if her brother was like that.

Matt wasn't the best a showing his feelings so Melanie found the little things that would show her what he felt.

His eyes would brighten whenever he saw his friends, he would scrunch his nose to fake a smile but those were only a few things Melanie noticed. Her brother was like a sunflower, he would make peoples day brighter and loved to make others laugh.

Happy memories like these weren't as frequent as Melanie wanted them to be, the more frequent ones were always the same. The moment she found out about her brother's accident and the moment she found out he didn't make it.

It was probably in the afternoon that this happened, Melanie didn't remember the time, it was so sudden like bullet getting fired to her heart.

At first she didn't really understand what was going on but she remembers her mothers screaming and crying which was enough to make her know it wasn't something good.

Maria had fallen down and trashed around sobbing while Railey crouch down to comfort her, she had been so in shock that she didn't even know what to do.

She knew that she had to do something but when she turned around to look at her daughter that was when she understood that Melanie had no idea what was going on.

The poor teenager had just come home from a party and had seen multiple policemen in front of her house. She had come home to a sobbing mother, a shocked one and a missing brother.

Railey knew her daughter wasn't going to take the news well, she would deny is at first or just think it was a joke and Railey couldn't blame her daughter because that were her exact thoughts. She knew that she couldn't do anything but her mind was longing for a camera to suddenly come out, everyone saying that it was a joke and that Matt would jump out of a bush but that was never going to happen and Railey knew it.

"Melanie, come here sweetie," she said looking at her daughter with tears.

Melanie slowly walked until she was right in front of her mothers. She didn't know what to think, maybe someone broke in and took something. Melanie looked at Maria who had stood up when she saw her daughter, acting strong she knew she couldn't break down in front of her.

"What...what is happening, i don't-" Melanie said, trying to work out the scene in front of her. An hour ago, she was partying with her friends and now she was in front of her house with police officers and two distraught mothers.

"We will...we will explain everything to you, but right now please Melanie go inside in the living room," Maria said, her voice breaking.

Melanie stood in place for a few more minutes before starting to walk careful into the house, she was wary of the officers until she saw Officer Peterkin who was next to her door taking notes.

"Officer Peterkin, what...what is... what is happening!?" she said trying desperately to get answers. Officer Peterkin looked up and saw the girl.

"Oh Melanie, I can't tell you what happened...I'll let your mothers tell you." she said in a stern but gentle voice almost in pity.

"But-" Melanie started but saw the look on Officer Peterkin's face. She knew something was really wrong.

Melanie went through the doors only to find more officers roaming around her house, she walked to the living room and sat on the L shaped couch. She looked at the officers who all had a stern face looking around her house searching for something.

Her mothers came walking in after a few minutes, they sat down on either side of her. The next few moments were the most terrifying and scariest moments to ever happen in her life.

It couldn't be true, it just couldn't. Her brother, Matthew Fortini had gotten into an accident, the boy who had just gotten her a gift in the morning, the one who cooked breakfast for everyone, the one who had taught her how to play video games was dead. She would never be able to do anything with him. She don't know how to react.

Maybe if she didn't go to that stupid party, she could have stayed home with her brother and made him stay with her. Maybe that would have stopped whatever happened after, she could have stooped the death, she could have done so much more and Melanie knew that she could have done more.

"Melanie sweetie, look at me" Maria said looking at her daughter. "No...no this...this has to be...be a joke right, yeah...yeah," stuttered Melanie trying to comprehend what she was just told.

She looked at her mothers half expecting them to yell 'yes it was a joke' but they just looked at her with the worst emotions showing right through their eyes. She shook her head again and again and stood up in denial running upstairs to her room. She locked the door while hearing her mothers yelling her name.

Melanie knew she couldn't bring herself to look at them or anyone for that matter. She had cried for days even weeks until her mothers had one day told her to pack her things. They were moving.

πŒπ„π‹π€ππˆπ„ was still sitting on the rocks, remembering these memories wasn't the best experience since they came back. The soft sunlight had gotten harder and was now rays of sunlight sipping through the vines, the sound of cars was heard from a far away distance and the birds were still chirping.

She didn't know what to do, does she go back home or stay away for a while? Melanie hadn't thought of her friends, the friends she had left here or even her ex-boyfriend for that matter.

Melanie got up from her sitting position and walked around the cave for a while, trying to remember everything that was positive about coming back but that did not happen.

She walked to the vines and heard her phone make a notification sound, it made her jump a little, it had been so quiet that she had forgotten her phone was with her.

"Come home sweetie, lunch is ready!" said the text from her mother, Maria.

Melanie sighed and walked out of the cave through the vines, she walked for a while until she reached the road. It was still the same except that there were more people and more animals roaming around. She quickly walked to the path that leads to her house.

Melanie didn't know that a certain curly haired brunette had seen her and had taken a mental note to go talk to her later, Melanie wouldn't see the things coming to her...
