Monroe was always a quiet child, even when his family life was closer to normal and he was given the suggested amount of attention for a kid to receive. When he became a ward of the state, he got even quieter, and refused to speak during the required therapy sessions. But that was not to say he didn't have a personality. No, he certainly had traits of his own that shone through even silence. He was good with kids, kind, and he loved music. Aside from the drug problem, he was a good kid. But because he refused to give it up, and because no therapist could ever get to the bottom of why he refused to give it up, very few people could actually see he was a good kid.

Growing up in a single-parent household was always a bit difficult, but Monroe and his mom got along fine after his dad left them. It wasn't until his mom died and he was placed in foster care that Roe's life began to spiral, and he became a "troubled youth," as the system called him. He didn't really see the problem, not when drugs helped keep his anxiety down. Still, it was apparently wrong to smoke no matter how it made him feel, and he wasn't going to just give it up on his own, so problems ensued. There were no group homes in his small hometown, so he bounced from foster family to foster family until he'd gone through them all, and then he was made to move to another town, where the cycle began again. This happened multiple times, until he really had nowhere else to go. But before his last family was fully set on sending him back into the system, they got permission from the state to try camp sundown.

Spiders, dogs, and deep water are Monroe's biggest fears. He himself doesn't know the origin of two out of the three.

Monroe's breaking point came after he was kicked out of school for skipping class and smoking in the bathroom (for the third time). His foster mom, the first one in a while he'd genuinely liked, hadn't wanted to send him back to the state but couldn't keep him in her family without change, and so she had turned to camp sundown.

Roe had a hard time sleeping on a good day. So after the fight he'd had with Bella earlier, it was no wonder that he was still awake when a car pulled into the driveway at two in the morning. He frowned at the sound of a car door closing and turned his phone on to look at the time, squinting at the suddenly bright light. When he saw how late it was, he sat up in bed, careful not to make any noise and wake the boy in the bed next to his. He could hear quiet talking, likely coming from the living room, and he was getting ready to get out of bed and check out the situation when the door to his room creaked open, light shining through the crack.

Bella, his foster mom, stepped into the room, wrapped in her cotton robe from Target with her hair pulled in a low bun at the nape of her neck, and gestured for him to join her in the hallway when she saw that he was awake. He did so, albeit hesitantly, confused and a little concerned now by the look on Bell's face.He became even more confused at the sight of four men, large and strong-looking and standing beside his foster mom in the hallway.

"Bella... what's going on?" He asked slowly, edging sideways a bit. He didn't like the feeling of being surrounded, which was only getting worse the longer he stood there.

He was quiet as she explained, talking about how she loved him, how she was sorry she didn't tell him sooner, but that she was scared he'd run. She told him how he was a bad influence on the other kids, and even though she knew he had good intentions and things he'd like to forget, she couldn't keep him here with the way he was acting now, and there was nowhere else for him to go except this... "camp sundown" place. He listened the entire time, standing still, and it likely looked like he might be compliant until one of the men reached for his phone, and what she was saying suddenly became real.

"The desert? The Gobi fโ€”-ing desert?! There's no way in hell," He snapped, jerking his arm back and moving to slip past her, fully intent on running. Before he knew what was happening though, the strong-looking men had jumped into action, taking hold of him and grabbing his phone, telling Bella something about how they'd take it from there. He continued to fight, trying to get away and using all of his strength to do so, but his energy was waning and he was much weaker than any of the stupid body-builders he was up against. The last thing he saw before they managed to get him into the car was Bella, close to tears and turning away to comfort the younger kids, who had woken up at the commotion. And though he felt a twinge of regret at not going quietly, the feeling of betrayal was worse, and he only settled down when he was in the car and the doors were locked, and he felt like he might cry.
