Josie

"Josie! Wake up, honey!" I heard Momma shout as she knocked on the door.

I groaned. "In a second!"

I forced myself out of bed and stretched my still sleepy limbs, sighing as I started out the window of my room.

Well, not really much a room. Just an old mattress in the corner of what was once an office, a desk in the middle with some dusty books I read, holding the few clothes I own, and a small shelf with small little meaningless trinkets and junk, and

I get my flannel shirt, and a dark grey wife beater with a clean(ish) pair of jeans and head out to the bathroom, seeing Momma filled the big metal tub for me and left a bar of soap nearby.

I got undressed and in the cold water, taking the bowl and dumping water over me to clean off, then getting the soap bar.

I sighed as I stared at the scars on my arms and body, and just kept cleaning.

I still get nightmares sometimes. Of all the torture and horrible acts they did to us... To me...

I'm just glad my brothers and their friends ended it all, and we all live in peace.

I continue to get clean and soon was done, drying myself off before pulling on my clothes and brushing my hair, then strapping on my dusty old boots before grabbing my red flannel and heading out for breakfast, greeting some people as I made my way out.

I should probably introduce myself. My name is Joselyn, but I mostly go by Josie. When the apocalypse happened, it was just me, my mother Mary, and my brothers, Alex and Gareth. Our father died before it all happened.

When it did, we started a sanctuary, known as Terminus.

We take in survivors, and build a community.

Long ago, when I was only 15, bad people came. They did awful things to us. They'd kill, rape, steal, torture, abuse.... the list goes on.

But we fought back. We killed them. Garth and Alex took care of the leaders, and soon we were safe again.

Terminus became a sanctuary once again, and we all live hapoily together. Some still need to recover just a little more, like me, but we manage just fine.

But sometimes nightmares still tend to stick around.

I stepped out of the building and smiled at the dull shining sun.

Life seems pretty okay, despite the small imperfections.
