I woke up a day after that. I was in my home. I couldn't see Jasper around. I called for him but he didn't answer. I sat up. I found a letter on the bedside table. It was written by Jasper. My insides froze. Adrenaline rushed through my veins. The letter was :

10th September, 1967
Sporgilou 10, Athens
My love,
I'm sorry. The pain of losing my child is too much for me. I had lied to you. Not only your parents, but also mine died in the fire. Along with them, died my property. Also, I lost my job in the restaurant. I'm sorry but I've agreed to get married to Maria. When you read this letter, I might be married.
Bye. Take care of yourself.  I've left some money in the drawer.

Jasper.

I felt as if someone was stabbing me over and over again with a sharp dagger. The difference was that my pain was mental.

I got ready and went to the restaurant. The owner told me that Maria and Jasper had gone on their honeymoon.

After coming home, I cried and cried. I took some strong drinks. The next day, I felt perfectly okay. I decided to live, if Jasper could have a happy life without me, why can't I?

I started singing at restaurants and bars. Soon I became quite popular.

One day, while walking home, I saw a small girl. She looked sweet. She was quite fair, had black curly hair and black eyes. Soon, I was holding her in my arms before I realized. Seeing me, she said,"Sleep...slsl...sleep!"

"You want to sleep?" I asked her.

She nodded. Suddenly, a woman came running towards me.

"You found her? Thank God!" the woman sighed with relief.
"Who are you?" I asked her.
"I am a nanny. I work at the orphanage," she replied.
"Is she from the orphanage?" I asked and looked at the baby again. She looked so sweet.
"Yes," the nanny replied.

I felt affection for that baby. She looked just like I imagined my child to be. I decided to adopt her.

"I want to adopt her," I said without a second thought.

" Follow me," the nanny replied.

After completing some formalities the baby was mine. I named her Flora Skylark.
