INSPIRATION FOR THIS FANFICTION

this would be an AU/sequel to my other fic ATELOPHOBIA. 

here's the summary from that fic:

❝Marianna Lockwood, named after her great-great-great-whatever ancestor Marianna Lockwood. She prefers Mari, though. She was the first born of the Lockwood children, gracing her family with her presence in April 1992. Richard Lockwood had wanted a son, so when Mari turned out to be a girl... well, let's just say her younger brother, Tyler, joined the family in February 1993. The Lockwood siblings had to be perfect, at least on the outside, as they were the Mayor's children and one of the founding families.

Balancing being the Mayor's 'perfect' daughter whilst trying to live a relatively normal teenage life is hard enough as it is, but with the Salvatore brothers coming to town? Mari wasn't sure life would ever be the same.❞

so Mari is an untriggered werewolf. 

this plot would start just after klaus' ritual. 

very crucially, MARI DOES NOT KNOW ELENA SURVIVED. 

(( i would want to save jenna and have a different vampire sacrificed because i love jenna <3 ))

for reasons i haven't quite decided/been able to come up with - Klaus takes both Mari and Stefan on his werewolf hunting trip.

a potential reason i've considered could be Klaus wanting to keep tormenting Stefan. the fact that Stefan murdered Mari's namesake in a ripper binge in 1912 would be an irony that klaus would love.

for those of you who don't know - the original Marianna Lockwood lived in Mystic Falls in 1912 with her best friend Samantha Gilbert. She was killed by Stefan who had become a Ripper after drinking human blood for the first time in decades. 

At the time, she was thought to be another victim of the "Mystic Falls serial killer," who had been murdering other members of the Founder's Council. Ten years after her death, her friend Samantha confessed to the murders as a result of her psyche being corrupted by the effects of the Gilbert ring. 

anyways, another thought i had was that klaus wanted mari to learn about her heritage, or the 'true nature of werewolves'. 

mari is still reluctant (understandably!) and so klaus is all "when you see how good my hybrids are you'll be begging me to turn you". 

... we all know how that ends.

klaus has to kill all of the failed hybrids while stefan runs through the woods after the runaway one. 

mari is with klaus so doesn't see elena at all, thus she still believes that elena died in the ritual. 

After Gloria revealed to Klaus that Rebekah had what she needed to contact The Original Witch, Klaus reluctantly resurrected his sister, Rebekah. While she is resurrecting, Klaus compelled a guard to let her feed from the guard and also told the guard to tell her where to meet Stefan and Klaus. After rising from the dead, Rebekah is delighted to see Stefan again, but is furious after she is unable to find her necklace. She was appalled by modern music and fashion. Gloria uses Rebekah to find the amulet and after doing so, threatens to kill the girl with her necklace and her friends.

mari obviously doesn't know what rebekah's necklace looks like. stefan does and knows that he gave it to elena but revealing this would put both mari and elena in danger so the plot would continue as it did in canon with stefan keeping it secret. 

i'd like to have a cute bonding moment between rebekah and mari here. maybe mari asks rebekah to draw the missing necklace. mari would recognise it as elena's or at least being similar to elena's and would become upset. 

rebekah would ask her what was wrong and i think it would be a kind of awkward comforting situation because rebekah wouldn't really know what to do. she's never really had any girl friends before. 

As Stefan is about to open Elijah's coffin, Rebekah walks in. He tells her he remembers they were running from someone and inquires about it. Rebekah tells Stefan that she can't talk about it, and instead pulls Stefan into a long kiss. Rebekah then asks afterwards if he'll love another girl the same way he loved Elena. Stefan says he hopes to and tries to kiss Rebekah again, but she stops him, saying his kiss gave him away. Klaus appears, and Rebekah reports that Stefan is not on their side, as he's asking about Mikael.

once they're all back in mystic falls, rebekah still tells stefan that klaus knows that the doppelgänger is still alive, whenj she is meant to be dead, and klaus won't be merciful. 

stefan attacks her, but as rebekah is an original vampire she quickly overpowers him and 'out of jealousy' stabs him. 

the plot of that episode and beyond would continue as it did in canon. 

i think the difference would be that mari would feel beyond betrayed and heartbroken that 'everyone' knew elena was alive the whole time and no one had told her. 

(now i'm not 100% sure about this fact, but it is fanfiction so we'll go with it) - they would argue that as an untriggered werewolf mari could have been compelled and so it wasn't safe to tell her

mari is not impressed with that argument and a classic lockwood temper tantrum ensues:

❝well i would've triggered my curse to keep that secret!❞ 

❝mari, you're saying you would've killed to keep that secret, you don't mean that--❞ 

❝i do! i do! don't you dare tell me what i mean and what i don't mean. i would do anything for elena, and i have, all summer -- whether she knows it or not -- because that is what you do when you love someone--❞

oops, she didn't mean to say that... 

that's all i really have planned currently. 

rebekah enrols in mystic falls high and mari ditches her own friend group to be besties with rebekah, even after all of the shit klaus put her through in the summer. 

frenemies to lovers (eventually). 

mari's got to get over her unrequited crush on elena, and rebekah has to realise that stefan has moved on since the 1920s.
