Starting Piano

When I was six, my mom decided she wanted me to start learning piano. I didn't really have an opinion on it until I started going to classes. I started off at a place a few cities over taking group classes. It was good for me to learn the basics there but it wasn't a place where I could really progress so after two years I moved to a studio with private lessons.

Starting out, I hated piano. I loathed lessons and had to be bribed to go. Luckily for me, my group lessons ended during happy time and there was a Sonic right across the street. I got a Sonic slushie every time I passed off my song in lesson. Towards the end of the second year, I was starting to enjoy piano. However, I wasn't progressing and my mom wasn't too thrilled with having to drive 30 minutes every week for my lesson.

She switched me to a teacher who lives in our town and teaches private lessons. I no longer got bribed to go to piano but that was okay because I had found my own drive to practice and go to lessons.

This drive helped me go on to state festival many years and even win state one year. My experiences with piano have taught me that even though something isn't fun at first, once you get better and practice more, it will get fun and it can become something you love.
