❝Sometimes we just fall in love with the wrong people.❞

Elena paused when she saw several people standing outside her apartment door. She sighed as she got her keys out and looked at them knowingly. "Okay, who's first?"

"She is," Auggie pointed to Riley as he read off the schedule in his hands, "Dad, do you have an appointment?"

"No, I'm a walk-in."

"It's not hard to schedule an appointment y'know," Auggie complained with a huff, "Makes a lot of lives easier!"

"Sorry, Cor, we're packed today. Feel free to read one of our waiting room magazines," Elena gestured to the array of Vogue magazines she had on her coffee table as she led the group into her apartment.

"You wouldn't have to wait if you made an appointment," Auggie grumbled as he wrote Cory's name down at the end of the schedule.

"Well, Auggie, who's next on the list?" Cory asked his son as he tried to get a glance at the schedule.

"Maya, then Farkle, then Lucas, then Zay," He listed before giving him an unimpressed look, "And then the walk-in's."

"Well, can't you bump me up on that there list," He suggested with a charming smile, "Y'know, for your good old buddy Dad."

Auggie stared at him blankly. "Walk-in's go at the end of the line."

"But I'm your father!" Cory whined as he crossed his arms childishly.

"But you didn't make an appointment," Auggie snapped.

"Okay, while they figure that out we can figure whatever's going on in Rileytown," Elena smiled fondly at her Goddaughter and led her into her office, "So, what's up buttercup?"

"Triangle," She answered simply as she threw her head into Elena's lap with a heavy sigh.

"Awe, monkey," Elena cooed as she ran her hand through Riley's hair comfortingly.

'Monkey' had been Elena's nickname for Riley seemingly since she had been born.

"I really like Lucas but so does Maya and I care more about my friendship with her than a relationship with Lucas," Riley explained sadly, "I don't want to hurt her but I don't want to be hurt either," She slowly sat up and her eyes widened, "Does that make me selfish."

Elena chuckled softly as she wrapped an arm around Riley, pulled her close, and kissed the top of her head. "Monkey, you don't even know the meaning of the word. If you were selfish then this triangle wouldn't be happening right now."

"What am I supposed to do?" She asked innocently, "Dad always asks you what to do and he's doing great. Tell me what to do."

"I wish I could but you're not Cory," Elena sighed, "And this is something you need to fix on your own."

"Did something like this ever happen to you when you were in school?"

Elena froze as memories of middle school and high school hit her. Riley had no idea but her Godmother had gone through almost the exact same thing.

"Mhm," She nodded stiffly and hopped Riley would let it go but she knew that was not going to happen.

"Well, then what did you do?" Riley asked as she sat up straighter, excitement brewing in her eyes at the prospect of getting an 'Aunt Elena story' to use as a guide for her own.

Elena paused as she tried to think of the best way to answer. She knew that Riley would, with the best of intentions no matter how dumb, would use whatever she said right now as a rule of law. She smiled softly at how much the girl reminded her of Cory.

"Honey, sometimes the person that we think is perfect for us couldn't be more wrong for us," She spoke softly, "And we can try and force ourselves to believe that they are the right person for us and for a while we'll believe that. But that won't last. Sooner or later you'll be forced to admit that you're just not the right fit for each other."

"So are you saying that Lucas and I aren't the right fit?" She frowned as she looked away sadly.

Elena quickly grabbed her chin gently and made her face her. "No. I'm saying that I thought someone was perfect for me and it turned out that they weren't. But that's not the end of the world. And it is not the end of yours or your friendship with Maya. Now the two of you? Perfect fit, 100%."

"But what about Lucas," Riley asked quietly as she played with the rings on Elena's hand.

"Riley, no one but the three of you can decide what happens with the triangle. The three of you just need to think. You need to decide if you really like Lucas or just the idea of him," She advised and grabbed Riley's hand, giving it a squeeze.

Her brows furrowed. "You think I don't really like him?"

"In high school, there was this boy who I thought I was head-over-heels for. I thought he was perfect and I thought that made him perfect for me. Turns out we were way better off as friends. And sometimes your friends turn out to be better boyfriends."

"Really?" She tilted her head to the side.

"Really," Elena poked her nose fondly, "How do you think your parents got together? They were friends first until your mom asked him out."

"Mom asked dad out?" Riley gasped in shock as her eyes widened comically.

"Mhm, Cory was too scared to do it. If your mom hadn't done that then we'd still be waiting for your dad to ask her out," Elena laughed loudly.

"I can hear you, y'know!" Cory snapped, his voice muffled by the closed door.

"I know!" Elena yelled back, "I said it loud enough for you to hear!"

"So, sometimes friends become more than friends?" Riley mused.

"Mhm," She nodded and gave her a knowing look, "Like maybe you and a certain friend..."

"What?!" Riley scoffed nervously as she stiffened, "Farkle is just my friend, there's nothing going on between us."

"Whatever you say, Monkey."

"I'm being serious!" She complained with a pout.

"Well, it's just that's kinda hard to believe when I never said anything about Farkle," Elena mused teasingly.

Riley froze and her eyes slowly widened before she cleared her throat. "Yes, you did."

"Nope, didn't say a thing about Farkle."

"I do not like Farkle!"

"Okay," Elena shrugged.

"I don't."

"Okay."

"There is nothing going on between me and Farkle!"

"Okay, Monkey. I get it."

"Oh, my God!" Riley gasped, "Do I like Farkle?"

Elena laughed softly before holding her arms out. "Come here, monkey."

Riley threw herself into Elena's chest and wrapped her arms around her as thoughts of Farkle spun around in her head.

After a while, she'd finally decided she was ready to start talking about.

Well, it was actually because of Cory banging on the door and complaining about other people having problems they need to talk about too.

"Well, it can't be that big of a deal," Auggie has huffed in response, "It wasn't important enough for you to make an appointment."

"Will you let that go already!" Cory huffed as he stooped his foot childishly.
