CHAPTER SEVENTY-NINE: FIRE AND RAIN !

━━━━━━

IT HAD BEEN ABOUT A MONTH SINCE THE UNDERCOVER CASE. The rest of the team had been out on a day off and Casey was still in the office. She was currently working on paperwork when suddenly, her phone began to ring. She checked the Caller ID and smiled once she saw who was calling. "Hey, you." Casey smiled.

"Hey." Saywer's voice picked up on the opposite line. "What's up?" Casey asked. "Uh, nothing much but I think I'm gonna need you and your team down here and soon." Sawyer told and Casey paused. "Why?"

Sawyer had explained the situation to Casey and Casey had decided to bring it over to Hotch. The case that Sawyer brought her seemed to be a little odd and it was definitely something the team needed to look into.

Casey rapped her knuckles on the doorframe and catches Hotch's attention. "Hotch?" Casey walked in the office. "May I speak with you?"

"Sure, have a seat." Hotch offered and Casey decided to sit down. "Uh, Sawyer— Officer Gunthey..." Casey corrected herself. "He invited us on a case. And you should be getting a call any minute now. A girl has gone missing."

Hotch looked up. "For how long?" Suddenly, his cell phone rang before he could answer. "Hotchner." Hotch took a pause. "Yes, I— Really?" He looked up at Casey. "We will be down there soon. Thank you."

"Did you find out?" Casey asked in curiousness. "Two hours ago, a young girl was found near the lake. Down in Pennsylvania. She drowned in the lake." Hotch informed. "Do you think it pertains to the other case?" Casey asked. Hotch shrugged as he stood up. "Possibly. What do you have?"

After speaking with Casey, Hotch called the rest of the team in as they set up in the roundtable room. The team had all joined the roundtable room and JJ was the last to walk in. "Hey, guys." Hotch greeted the team.

"What's going on? Did a case go through to Hotch?" Garcia asked. "Well—" Hotch paused and looked towards Casey. "Actually, this one came to me. And Hotch, technically. From Sawyer. In JJ's hometown." She held the remote up. "Stephanie Moore. She had just been reported as missing."

       "For how long?" Morgan asked.

Hotch and Casey looked at one another before Casey decided to answer. "Twelve years." She told. Everyone looked at one another in confusion. "Twelve years?" Emily asked. "How come we're just hearing about this?" JJ asked.

"Stephanie's mother, Joni, had come to the police about it before when Stephanie first went missing, but they never had anything to go on so the case turned cold. And recently, Joni had scrounged up her own money and decided to go to the police and demanded a detective and the FBI to get involved." Casey explained.

"So, Stephanie went missing when she was seventeen, so, that would make her in her late twenties-early thirties? What makes her so sure she's alive?" Morgan questioned.

       "Mother's intuition." JJ answered.

"They haven't gotten anything from Stephanie, no letters? No e-mail?" Emily asked.

"This is actually where it gets freaky. About seven years ago, a baby was stopped at the Moores' doorstep with a handwritten letter from Stephanie — saying that everything was alright, she met a guy, but they were not ready for a baby yet." Casey informed the team. "So, that baby is currently in second grade and living at the Moore's home."

         "Any suspects?" Reid questioned.

"Father said that he suspected a past boyfriend but he talked to him once and knew it wasn't him." Casey told.

"We'll still need to check just to be sure. Twelve years is a long time but we should still check it out if it pertains to the newest body they've found. Wheels up in 10." Hotch informed.

The team began to grab the files in front of them and Casey stood next to Reid, who glimpsed at her and immediately looked away. "Save me a spot on the jet?" Casey asked and Reid looked down at his watch and said:
"Don't know, maybe." He walked out of the office, leaving Casey dumbfounded.

Casey furrowed her brows and tossed her thumb over towards the door and looked at Emily and JJ. "Did he just give me the cold shoulder?" Casey asked. "Did he?" Emily asked. "Yeah. That was weird. He was fine a minute ago." JJ shrugged. "Weird." Casey commented.

The team headed onto the jet, Reid decided to sit on the couch and Casey took a seat over at one of the jet seats to give Reid his space. Maybe he was dealing with something, he'd go to Casey when he was ready.

"So, what do we know about Stephanie Moore?" Morgan asked. "Stephanie Moore was seventeen when she went missing, she was accepted at Yale University before she disappeared." Emily explained.

"According to her mother, she had her whole life planned ahead of her, wanted to get the hell out of dodge as soon as possible." Rossi added. "And soon enough she did." Hotch added on.

"And she's been gone twelve years?" JJ asked. "This is my question, why did it take the mother twelve years to go to the FBI and find her?"

"Like Casey said, the case went cold. She couldn't have had that much evidence to where her daughter could've been." Morgan said. "And the letter left by Stephanie when her son was dropped off at their doorstep could've settled her mind."

"But still, why did it take her so long?" Reid asked. "According to Sawyer, she had saved up enough money to hire a private investigator." Casey answered.

"When we get to Philadelphia, Morgan, Reid, JJ, I want you to go to the Moores' home, chat with them, get a sense of what Stephanie was like before she disappeared. Rossi, Emily, go down to the morgue, check out the body that was found at the lake. Willows and I will go to the PD and set up." Hotch ordered the team.

━━━━━━

Casey and Reid went to the PD and Casey was greeted with her boyfriend in his officer uniform. "Hey." Sawyer said and Casey smiles a bit as she approaches him. "Hey." She gives him a peck on the lips. What Casey didn't notice was Reid rolling his eyes at the sight.

"Agent Hotchner." Sawyer holds his hand out as Hotch approaches the two. "Officer Gunthey." Hotch shakes his hand. "Thank you for coming down."

Casey turns her attention to the man that Sawyer was speaking to briefly before they entered. "Detective Rollins, the Moores' private investigator." The man introduced himself.

"Shouldn't you be with the family?" Hotch questions. "Joni Moore wanted me here so the minute you had new information about her daughter, I'd call her." The detective told.

Hotch nodded in understanding when he had been getting a phone call. "Garcia." He walked away and Casey decided to help Sawyer set up in another room. As they set up the board, the two talked.

"Twelve years, do you think she'd still be alive?" Sawyer asked. "It'd be a miracle if she was," Casey answered. "But with cases like these, we're never so sure." Sawyer sat down on the table and sighed. Casey looked his way and noticed he seemed anxious. "Hey." Sawyer turned over to his girlfriend. "What's going on?" She asked.

Sawyer sighed again and ran a hand through his hair. "I have to tell you something." Casey stiffened a bit. "I let on a little less than what I knew about Stephanie Moore."

Casey looked at him. "What do you mean?" Sawyer looked up at the girl as if almost to say: 'don't make me say it'. The girl read through him like a book once she pieced it together in her head. "You dated her." She stated.

Sawyer nodded and looked at the ground next. "Yeah." Casey sat next to him. "Well, why didn't you tell me?" She asked.

"I was going to," Sawyer told. "It just wasn't news you delivered over the phone. 'Hey, Casey, I got a case for you and it involves my ex-girlfriend.'" Casey chuckled a bit. "I thought it was better to tell you when you got here. Stephanie and I dated briefly, it wasn't long but we remained good friends. I grew up with the family. You know, I considered her a sister. Then, she left with no warning. And I find out she has a baby, only safe to assume she moved on, you know? So, I did, too." Sawyer explained.

Casey grabbed onto Sawyer's hand. She was glad he told her about Stephanie and didn't keep it a secret. But there was one thing that lingered in her mind. "You're not the guy Oliver Moore suspected, are you? Because if you are, I am so kicking your
ass—"

"No, no, I'm not." Sawyer assures. "Stephanie and I were just friends. And I didn't feel the way I did I for her like I feel for you." He nods.

"We're gonna find her," Casey assured as Sawyer looked her way. "Dead or alive, I promise you, we will."

Sawyer smiled a bit. "What would I do without you?" He asked and Casey pretended to think and said: "Crash and burn." The two smile and kiss. Casey decides that she needs to finish the board so she stand and finishes it off.

━━━━━━

Garcia checked in on the past boyfriend they suspected and he was clean. Meanwhile, when Morgan, JJ and Reid went to the Moores' home, they discovered themselves that Sawyer knew Stephanie and Reid couldn't wait to deliver this news to Casey. He'd secretly hoped for a fight between them. So when Sawyer was going to get coffee at the shop in front of the PD building, Reid decided to corner him.

"Are you gonna tell her?" Reid approached him and Sawyer gave him a confused look. "Tell who what?" He asked. "Casey," Spencer told. "Are you gonna tell Casey about you and Stephanie Moore or are you still gonna keep it a secret from her?"

Sawyer rolls his eyes. "I don't believe that's any of your business, dude." He tries to move out of the way and walk away but Reid steps in front of him, blocking his path. Sawyer scoffs, "You're kidding, right?"

"You know, Casey's one of my best friends, I don't like seeing someone jeopardize that or her." Reid told.
"Jeopardize her? Look, I don't know what your deal is but you need to back off." Sawyer pushes Reid and Reid immediately pushes his arm away. "Don't touch me."

"You're the one that's acting like a child." Sawyer sighs and tries to walk away but Reid moves in front of him again and this time, knocks Sawyer's coffee cup out of his hand. This time, Sawyer shoves Reid and that gets the attention of the team, who had been outside, enjoying their own cups of coffee. "The hell's your problem, man?" Sawyer questioned.

"You," Reid spat. "You're my problem."

"Seriously?" Sawyer questioned. "You wanna do this here? You're a stick in a suit. I could mop the floor with you—" Suddenly, Sawyer was interrupted by Reid punching him in the face. Reid shook his hand off and Sawyer looked back at Reid and the two began to get into a brawl.

This caught the attention of the team and "Spencer! Sawyer! Stop!" Casey yelled as Morgan and Hotch ran in to pry them off of each other. "Spencer, get off of him! Stop it!" Casey yelled once more.

Morgan grabbed Reid and Hotch grabbed Sawyer. Sheriff Brown made his way outside and stood in front of the two. "Both of you, stop this now." He ordered.

Casey looked over at Sawyer. "Babe, are you okay?" She asked. "Yeah." Sawyer spit out the blood in his mouth. "What happened?" She questioned. "He just sucker-punched me." Sawyer told, pointing at Reid.

Casey looked at Reid in disbelief. He wiped the blood on his lip and spit himself as he glared at Sawyer. Casey didn't know what to do but what Spencer was doing was just... odd. He'd never had any problems with Sawyer before. This side of Spencer shocked her.

"Well, go inside, get some ice, I'll be there in a second." Morgan brings Sawyer inside, followed by the Sheriff, ready to chew his head off. And Casey looked over at Spencer, ready to do the same thing. "What the hell is wrong with you?!" She questioned.

"Casey." Emily tried but Casey ignored her as Reid was beginning to make his way over to the PD and inside.
"No, don't walk away from me. What, are you damaged or something?" Casey followed him in and the two were left alone in the copy room next.

"He didn't tell you. He dated Stephanie Moore." Reid explained his reasoning and Casey rolled her eyes. "Actually, he did tell me. Yeah, he negotiated a little bit but you didn't need to punch him. I mean, seriously, what's the matter with you? Do you have a stick up your ass or something?" She questioned.

Reid looked Casey's way and began to argue back. "I just don't understand why you and him have to flirt every chance you get. You did it on the last case here and you're doing it again. We need to focus on the task at hand and we can't be distracted." He explained and Casey scoffed.

"You-You think I'm distracted?" Casey questioned in disbelief. "Yes, I do." Reid nodded. "When people get into relationships, they tend to be distracted and I think that's what's going on."

Casey looked at Reid and shook her head. "You have no idea what our relationship is like, Spencer. We are perfectly capable of maintaining our relationship and work. Our relationship is none of your business, as a matter of fact. This is about something else, isn't it? 'Cause why else would this bother you?"

That was when Reid went silent. He didn't know what to say to that. I mean, what could he say?

"Oh, so now you're quiet?" Casey crossed her arms.

"It bothers me because you're acting like a tramp when you should be working." Reid spat out. "I mean, come on, have a little dignity of yourself."

Casey's face faltered once he said that sentence. Reid made a face, instantly regretting what he said. That's not what he meant to come out. Tramp. Casey tilted her head at Reid. "Tramp?" She says hoarsely as if she can't believe the word just came out of Spencer's mouth. "Oh, so I'm a slut now?"

"Casey—" Reid tried to fix his mistake but he knew there was no coming back from this. "Casey. I-I..." Reid couldn't fix this. He just screwed up any chance he had.

"Spencer, I'm everything, a bitch, messy, clumsy but the one thing I am not is a slut. And you know how hard that is to hear when you have gone through what I have gone through. I know my worth. I don't need this." With that, Casey opened the copy room door and walked out and Reid tries to follow her out.

        "Casey, wait!" Reid called.

"No, Spencer, screw you!" Casey yelled as she exited the PD.

The girl got into one of the vehicles and just drove. She couldn't believe what Reid called her. Casey slumped down in the seat and just cried. She always pitched Reid for someone that would never hurt her. But he did. With his words. That wasn't a friend. That's not what friends say to each other. To say that she was pissed at Reid was an understatement.

Casey had parked in front of the Moores' home and looked over the file. As she did so, the girl noticed Oliver Moore, Stephanie's father throwing a couple of box out into his garbage can. He looked suspicious enough as it was. Morgan had suspected him to have done something with Stephanie. I mean, he didn't want to be a part of finding his daughter, as if it weren't suspicious enough either.

Once Oliver Moore went back in the house, Casey got out of the car and checked the garbage can. She stuck her hand out and pulled out a small article of clothing. Baby clothes? Why would he throw out baby clothes? Casey pieced it all together and decided to head back to the PD to deliver her news.

She had gotten back to the team trying to figure out who the unsub could be when Casey chimed in. "It's Oliver Moore." The team turned over to her. "Casey." JJ spoke, approaching her. "He's our unsub." Casey added.

"Casey—" Hotch tried.

"A woman is not about to spend another twelve years hidden because of me." Casey told, looking at her boss, assuring that she was okay. "What makes you say it's Oliver Moore?" Emily asked.

"Think about it: Oliver Moore was agitated and hesitant when I went into that basement. He didn't even want us down there in the first place, tried to say there was mold down there." Morgan explained.

"I went by the house and Oliver was throwing things out and looking around like he didn't wanna be caught." Casey told. "Okay, I'll have Garcia do more of a background research. Rossi, Emily, Morgan, get there fast." The three nodded and that left Hotch, Casey, Reid and JJ left in the PD.

Reid approaches Casey. "I'm glad you're back. I was really worried there, I didn't know—"
"Stop." Casey told.
"I just—"
"Stop." Casey said a bit more stern this time. "Just because we stopped arguing... it doesn't mean that I still wasn't hurt by what you said."

"Casey—" Reid tried.

"Don't talk to me. Okay?" Casey told. "As a matter of fact, don't ever talk to me again. Resort our conversations to 'hello' and 'goodbye'. Just leave me alone." With that, she walked away and decided to check on Sawyer and his nose that Reid almost broke.

Soon, the team was called in by the hospital saying they had a Jane Doe that looked sickly. The parents were nowhere to be found and the girl was left alone. Casey and JJ went to go speak to her. And the girl didn't even know what the FBI was. They had gotten a name. Marie Moore. No medical records were found for the girl and she said her mother's name was Stephanie. She had also told them that her mother and father were in the hospital with her.

Hotch had the hospital go on lockdown and Casey had noticed a timid woman making her way over to her. Oliver had been right behind her and called her name. "Steph?" The woman kept making her way over and looked behind her before she looked at Casey and said: "I need help." Casey grabbed the girl and hugged her. "It's okay, it's okay, I got you." Oliver turned around and began to make a run for it but Hotch had chased him down and Morgan caught him.

It was discovered that Oliver kept his daughter held captive in their basement for years. He had impregnated her multiple times and she had over four children. One of them given to her mother, one of them found at the lake, one of them was still stuck in the basement and the other she was in the hospital with. The sick bastard was put away for life. Sawyer reunited with his best friend and Casey watched as it happened, her heart warming at the scene.

Casey turned around and looked over at Reid, who looked like he was going to approach her but Casey was having none of it. She went inside the room and closed the door behind her. There was nothing Reid could say or do to redeem himself. She was pissed at him. Time would tell if she would forgive him or not.
