Review: This book has fantastically creative premise; a boy that can talk to his shadow. It does a fantastic job of weaving in a number of mysteries very early on; what happened to his father, uncle and grandfather; is Randy a reliable narrator or does he have a mental health issue? The character is well developed, clearly anti-social and suspicious of others. The sense of alienation he feels as a teen is very relatable. This book does a great job of setting up a fast-paced paranormal mystery. There are some language issues that are relatively minor, but mostly center on using words and phrases that aren't quite right in the context. However, it's easy to read past this. The chapters are short, so this is a very fast read. The writer is highly creative and has wonderful moments where their developing voice comes through. Overall, a great read.

2nd(its a tie b/w two):

*Cataracts of Delusion by new_erasktaylor

Review: Overall review is a fantastic premise. The prologue starts with a murder and we jump straight into the action. There is some whiplash with flashbacks and scene changes happening very rapidly. The writer can also work on little things like not letting sentences get too long or unwieldy. Try using one word as much as possible...for example, instead of "extremely loud" you can use "deafening." Try to cut out unnecessary words as much as possible. Grammar mistakes are still pretty minimal and the story reads smoothly. The plot is extremely fast-paced .A great strength in the story telling is the writer's ability to keep you guessing and on your toes. It has quite a nail biting pace and reads like a great thriller

Review: This is a great romance with the strongest part being the premise of a red thread of fate tying two youngsters together at a young age. This means that for the them to part ways when they are older, one of them must make the ultimate sacrifice, leading to a very satisfying twist and ending to this book. There are some grammar issues and some things that can be addressed like headhopping between characters in the same chapter. Perhaps my main criticism is that although this is a lovely love story, and there is a supernatural element involving the thread of fate, I'm not quite sure that this is a mystery. In general, this is a lovely feel-good romance that does a good job depicting young love and attraction and builds into a story where love itself is the conflict. Are the characters able to choose love for themselves or are they bound by forces outside of their control? Fantastic premise.

Review: I must say I'm quite torn about this books. It's a very difficult one to review. There are things I love about it. I love the joint plot devices of religion and an insane asylym to underscore themes of horror, torture and sexual assault, as well as evil and innocence. The writer is extremely talented and does a great job of using language to create a tense and foreboding atmosphere, as well as being extremely descriptive. On the other hand, what I sometimes struggle with is that there can be so much flowery language, overuse of adjectives and synonyms, and very long, run-on sentences, that a lot of the meaning can be lost. I think the descriptive and emotive writing is great, but it should never come at the cost of clarity. This is definitely a book brimming with dark themes and the writer shows immense talent so I look forward to watching how they develop further.
