GHOSTS ARE WICKED LITTLE THINGS, STICKING TO THE WALLS, WATCHING, ALWAYS WATCHING. MIRIAM DARA KNEW THAT for certain. But who else knew? Who would be scared of ghosts? Mere child whispers and old stories that no one truly believed. It's hard to believe in things you cannot see. Something you can't see, cannot hurt you. It's why scared children hid their heads beneath blankets, and sour old man merely brushed away the stench of dead that clung to them like it was dust on their tattered coats.

Ghosts are stories, conjured by the mind. They would say

To them ghosts were the mere howling wind in bone cold nights, the soft creaks of old staircases and the silence in the darkness. It was the smile of a pretty girl, or the charming grin of a handsome man. It was everything and nothing.

For Miriam, there were many ghosts in The Barrel. Big, small, mean and not that mean. They are crawling in crevices and slipping through broken bricks. Some have names, some have not.

Miriam Dara likes to think herself invisble, much like a ghost, the thing in the dark no one can see ━ no one knows about, no one sees coming.

And many wish to disappear, to drop in shadows, drown in water and be reborn a phantom. The Barrel breeds those people as much as it breeds monsters.

But it is safer to be a ghost ━ for ghosts are not alive and no one wants to kill a dead girl.
