Training: Day One

(JONAS'S POV)

I rest my head on Boston's heaving chest. For the first time since my arrival in the Capitol, I'm legitimately calm. I sigh out of relief and try to lull myself back to sleep. Boston has been sleeping soundly all night, but I've been awake for a few hours, dreading the days ahead. The days of training, interviews, and entering the arena.  Knowing that what I do today and here after will result in my survival...or death. I shudder at the thought that I could be dead in just a few days, and Boston could too. I sneakily head back to my room and lock the door, already not taking any chances. On my neatly made bed lays my training uniform: a blue and orange tank top with matching pants. The number seven printed in swirly arraignment in the left strap and the right corner of my pants on my thigh. They snap on tightly and seem to be a good fit. What if the arena outfit is similar to this? What if the trainers are giving me agnate gear to prepare me for whatever's ahead?  There's so many possibilities for what the arena could be and it scary knowing anything could be thrown at me, and anything out there could produce my fate. I look at the digital clock on my stand, a luxury we don't have back in Seven. The blinking numbers read 6:55, which means Tontine will be getting ready to make her trip around the building to wake us up.

At exactly 6:59 I head over to the dining floor, where all the tributes will eat for their meals on the training days. And I'm surprised I'm not the only one here. The careers sit over at one of the far tables talking about who-knows-what-nonsense. Shanna and Ridge sit three tables down from the careers with four other tributes, I think from Six and Twelve. I grab a muffin from the buffet table and head over to the table, plopping down next to Shanna. "Hey," I remark sullenly, still tired from the minor amount of sleep I received.

"Priya, Everett, Hakuna, Boris," Shanna says pointing robotically to each of the tributes, "this is Jonas, from district Seven. She's the newest addition to our ally group."

'Group?' I think. 'More allies? I only wanted one, and that's Shanna!'
I roll my eyes, hoping no one catches my repulsive move.
"Does that work for you, Jonas?"
'Of course that's not okay!' I'm tempted to scream that out, but I just shrug and nod, doing my best to hide my anger.

"Great!" Shanna exclaims, and silence overcomes the table.
Boston's going to be mad when he realizes that I've teamed up with weaker tributes instead of Dhana and Hari like I had mentioned.  I stare off into space as I absentmindedly finish my muffin.  The spot where my muffin sat before is now flooded in crumbs. I groan and go back over to the buffet table where piles of napkins rest, and I grab a couple along with one more muffin.

"Most of you will die from natural causes instead of the mercy of another tribute." I listen intently as Melie, the head trainer, explains what the purpose of training is, and the rules.

"Also," she continues, "no hurting the other tributes during training, you'll have plenty of time for that during the games."
Melie shines a smile and giggles escape from Seal and Tara, the female tributes from Districts One and Two. I really despise them.

We're sent off to explore the stations and I immediately head over to the edible plants station, taking cautious heed to what Melie had said.  Out on the table holding all the edible plants, lays a book open to aged pages of charcoal paper.
"That's my grandparents' book." I jump back, startled by the random comment and am relieved to see that it's just Priya.

"This book is Katniss and Peeta's?" I ask, trying to sound interested.

"Yeah," she replied.  "It's what kept them alive in their first arena."

"That's... cool." Now I'm more intrigued to look at the book, knowing it could get me or Boston home, just like it did for Priya's grandparents.  I daintily turn the pages, careful not to rip or tear a single one.  As I turn the pages, a specific word catches my eye under the bolded heading
NIGHTLOCK. It reads, 'poisonous berry. Can be mistaken for blueberrys if not careful. If eaten, it will result in a quick, painless death.'

I shudder at the thought of a death caused just because I wasn't being smart. I'm careful to study each page and match them to the correct plants layed out on the table. I glance up for a second hoping to see Boston somewhere, and I do, just not in the position I had hoped. He's talking to the careers, but not in a kindly fashion. His fists are clenched at his sides and smiles make the careers faces glow. I so hate the careers, their never nice at all. It's unbelievably disturbing.

I look back to my book, and start focusing on the pages again. But I can't help thinking about what Boston was doing over by the careers, and what could possibly be making him that mad....
