AFTER SPENDING ALL their tokens by playing random games and the claw machine a few more times, Nancy and Robin leave the arcade with laughter brewing between them, giggling like maniacs about whatever that came to mind.

They were so enrapt in each other that they hadn't even noticed a group of teenagers inching towards them, anger flashing in their eyes. It was only when the leader of the group spoke up that Nancy and Robin noticed them.

"Hey, dykes," a male voice drifted towards them and Robin almost stumbled backyard when noticing the guy's face. It was Vicki's boyfriend with two goons by his side.

Nancy was the first to jump in. Although she was shorter than the guy and his minions, she stood with such confidence that was a distraction from her height. "What the hell?"

Vicki's boyfriend laughed— more like cackled, to be exact. "Aw, look at the little slut defending her girlfriend. Isn't that cute?"

Robin nervously latched onto Nancy's arm, leaning in close, her words coming out in a hushed whisper. "Don't bother. Let's just get out of here, okay?"

Nancy ignored her and shook her grasp off, stepping closer to the guy, her blue eyes showing no sign of backing down. "Why don't you fuck off, huh?"

The guy laughed again, his head thrown back as if he were howling at the moon. When he looked back at Nancy, a nasty grin was plastered on his face. "Y'know Wheeler, I've always had a thing for you. You're pretty hot despite you being a slut. Why don't we go back to my place and have some fun, hm? I can get you off girls."

Robin stood right behind Nancy, having to gag in disgust by his words. He was a cheater, too— that or he'd broken up with Vicki already, but she doubted that.

Nancy shot him a sarcastic smile. "No thanks. I don't sleep with guys that have a two inch dick."

The guy's friends howl with laughter while he just grits his teeth, his jaw clenched. Robin could see the fury in his eyes. "Your little bitch of a girlfriend got me suspended for a week. I had a fucking game tonight and now I might get kicked from the team. She ruined everything all because she couldn't keep her mouth shut."

"Well maybe you shouldn't have been such a dick," Nancy spat.

"Look, you whore, you better shut the hell up before I— "

"Before you what?" Robin cut in, spitting her words at him. "How about you get the fuck out of here and stop messing with us? Huh? Are you so bored that you have to fuck with other people? So bored that you feel the need to bully people that are different than you? What are you, ten years old? Grow the fuck up."

"You shut the fuck up, faggot," the guy snarled, about to launch himself at Robin but Nancy quickly grabbed her hand and ran.

They ran, their shoes sinking into the dirt, running until they reached the car. They could hear the sound of him and his friends racing after them. They both quickly fell into the car and Nancy sped off as fast as she could, dirt flying out from beneath the tires as she did so.

Robin panted, relieved that they made it out of there without as much as a scratch. She leaned her head back against the headrest, her mouth dry. "Fucking hell, man. I hate those bastards."

"Me too," Nancy softly agreed, keeping her eyes on the road as she drove.

Robin looked at her in concern. "You alright?"

"Yeah, yeah I'm fine," Nancy rushed out, glancing at Robin and giving her a reassuring smile. "Just tired."

Robin wasn't entirely convinced but she let it drop. Nancy was probably just shaken up from the encounter they'd just had, but Robin couldn't help but feel like there was more to it than just that.

Ten silent minutes later Nancy arrived at Robin's house and parked against the curb, looking to the taller girl next to her. She looked like she wanted to say something but she decided against it while her lips straightened into a thin line.

Robin opened her door but didn't make a move to step out of the car. She looked back at Nancy hopefully. "Do you, uh, wanna come inside with me?"

Nancy shook her head, a weak smile on her face. "I have to get home. There's some, um...stuff I need to think about. But I'll see you tomorrow, okay?"

Robin tried not to think too much about what she'd just said and nodded. "Okay. See you tomorrow."

She got out of the car and shut the door, standing in her front yard and watching as Nancy drove off. She wondered what Nancy had to think about. Hopefully it wasn't their friendship; Robin couldn't bare to think about Nancy not being her friend anymore.

She hadn't known Nancy for long, like really know her. If it weren't for their dumb history project they wouldn't have even talked to each other. Robin couldn't say she was mad about getting to know Nancy. If she hadn't, she would've still believed the girl was a stick up priss. But now she knew the truth, and she had a friend besides Steve.

If she lost Nancy as a friend, she wouldn't know what to do with herself. Even though she wanted more, even though she wished she could hold Nancy's hand and kiss her whenever she wanted to, she'd settle with just being a friend.
