The first few years after the marriage of the 4 princes of Ayodhya went by smoothly. Their lives were filled with love and contentment. Dashrath was extremely pleased, he had fulfilled the duty as a father.

But now age had started to catch up on the old emperor. Now he has to fulfil the duty of a king by announcing the next heir to the throne.

In the eyes of Dashrath, his eldest son Shri Ram was worthy to be the successor. He was a warrior par excellence, and also equally well in scriptures. He was known as Vedhase among the learned ones, which means well-read in Vedas.

Shri Ram also knew the nuances of finances as much as those of arts and modes of entertainment. In fact, he was adept in music and art. He was often referred to as Gandharv shreshth.

Shri Ram also had a complete grip on his emotions. No one could make out the thoughts in his head from his face. It was difficult to not like him. The people of Ayodhya loved him. He was as  approachable as he was discerning.

But that didn't mean that he was always soft. He was aware of anger in public life and knew how to use it. He was very perceptive about his own self and about others.

He was an eloquent speaker, master strategist and expert negotiator. He understood the importance of time and place in policy and behaviour.

These qualities of him made him worthy to be the king. Even Dashrath desired to see his eldest son on the throne of Kosal.

But as a king, Dashrath was accountable to his subjects. Hence he had to get approval of his people before choosing the next heir.

Hence he called upon the representatives of the subjects, the Mantri Parisad, the Mantri Mandal, officers, feudatory kings as well as prominent citizens from cities and villages.

Because Dashrath was in hurry to deliberate the matter of succession, he didn't invite kings of Kekeya and Mithila. Even Bharat and Shatrughan weren't present in the Kingdom at this moment, they went to visit their Nanashree, in Kekeya, the materal kingdom of Kaikeyi.

Dashrath thought once the matter is settled, both Kekeya and Mithila will get the good news about the next successor. Maybe the old king also wanted to avoid family interference which might cause conflicts of interest.

And now when everyone was seated in the royal court, Dashrath kept his proposal.

"Ikshvaku vansh ke poorv Rajao ke bhaati hi maine bhi apni kshamtao ke anuroop iss Rajya ka palan hai, jaise ek Pita apne santaano ka palan poshan karta hai. Maine satya aur nishtha se sadev apne praja ke hit mei karya kiye hai. Kintu ab mera deh vridh ho chala hai, mai ab apne uttardayitvo se mukt ho vishram karna chahta hu. Toh yadi aap sabki aagya ho, mai apne jyesht putra, Kaushalya-Nandan Ram ko iss desh ka raaj-paath saupna chahunga. Ram mei ek uttam shaashak ke sabhi gun hai, kintu bina aapke vicharo ko jaane Mai koi nirnaye nahi lunga." Dashrath said.

As soon as Dashrath spoke about appointing Shri Ram as the king, a wave of joy spread in the entire court. Everyone welcomed the decision, there was no objection.

But Dashrath wanted to be double sure, after all this was about the future of the kingdom and it's citizens.

"Aap sabhi ka ekmat hona mujhe sandeh mei daal raha hai. Kya aap sab iss liye taiyaar hai kyuki yeh Mera nirnaye hai, ya aapko Ram mei woh sab gun dikhte hai jisse woh ek Raja banne ke yogya ho ? Kripya bataye, Ram mei woh kaunse gun hai jisse woh Raja bane iss Rajya ka jis par maine dharm se shaashan kiya hai." Dashrath said.

And everyone present there spoke about the qualities of Shri Ram, that they deemed would be worthy in the next ruler.

"Ram samajhdaar aur dharmsheel hai. Gyaan mei toh woh Brihaspati ke samaan hai aur Parakram mei Indra samaan. Woh Bhu-devi ke bhaati dayalu aur chandra ke bhaati sheetal hai. Unke karm sadev praja ke prasannata hetu hote hai."

"Woh charitra-vaan hai aur sthir buddhi ke hai. Ram sabse sabhya roop se baat karte hai aur sabke prati karunamaye hai."

"Ram sadev bado ka aur gyaaniyo ka sammaan karte hai. Woh buddhimaano ke sang rehte hai aur satkaar karte hai jaise ek Rajkumar ko karna chahiye."

"Ram toh yudh aur ran-niti banane mei pravreen hai. Aisa koi shashtra ya Astra nahi jisme toh taksh nahi. Yaha tak ki woh sangeet mei bhi atulya hai. Ram atyant udaar aur buddhimaan hai. Unhe gyaat hai ki kab dand dena hai aur kab kshama karna."

"Aisa koi karya nahi jo Ram ne safalta poorvak poorn nahi kiya. Woh jab bhi Ayodhya ke seemao ko surakshit karke aate hai, sadev praja ko unke sukh dukh ke baare mei puchte hai jaise woh unka swayam ka parivaar ho. Isme woh streeyo, baccho aur sevako ko puchna bhi nahi bhulte. Awashyakta padne par woh praja ki dhaal banke khade rehte hai aur prasanatta ke avsar par praja ke saath utsav manate hai."

"Unke dharm-priyata aur mariyadit charitra ke karan sampoorn praja Ram se atyant prem karti hai. Rajya ki streeya chaahe yuvti ho ya virdh, sadev unke kalyaan hetu praathna karti hai. Samrat, yadi aap Ram ka Rajyabhishek karenge toh Kosal ke praja ki iccha purn ho jaayegi."

And thus one by one the people present at the court put forward their reasons to support the proposal of Dashrath. Thus it was unanimously agreed that Shri Ram indeed would be the next king of Ayodhya.
