For the dwarves of Erebor, expelled from their home so violently many years ago, life on the road was not only difficult but mostly their only option. Y/N was the daughter of two of those dwarves. She was raised entirely on the move, never sticking in one place for too long. It was never a boring childhood, and for that, Y/N was glad, but sometimes it could be lonely. Luckily, when she was about ten years old, another troupe of wandering dwarves, many from Erebor as well, encountered her own group and they merged into one. From this new arrangement came two new playmates for Y/N, their names Fili and Kili, who were the nephews of Thorin Oakenshield, the rightful King Under the Mountain. It was certainly an honor to be traveling with Thorin, but Y/N was much more interested in Fili and Kili, as they were curious and adventurous, just like herself, and very soon, the trio became the best of friends.

Years passed and before Y/N's parents knew it, their little girl was all grown up. So were her best friends, and by now, the elder of the pair (Fili) was often away with his uncle, learning how to be a benevolent, brave, strong crown prince. Y/N and Kili still spent time together, but it was not the same for either. Kili missed his brother's presence and Y/N yearned for the time he would return to them, more than she had ever thought she would. It was during this time that Fili was mostly gone from her life that Y/N realized just how much she loved him. She missed him dearly, but finally, after months and months, Thorin declared Fili prepared enough. Fili couldn't wait to return- he loved Y/N, he was sure, and now he was ready; unknown to either Kili or Y/N, the last few days of instruction were truly Thorin coaching Fili on how to best ask Y/N to court him.

It was snowing that evening, and when Fili approached Y/N from behind her, he noticed how she shivered in the chill, having forgotten her coat at her home- a usual occurrence. The campfire before her was roaring, but she still seemed cold. He tapped her on the shoulder and she whirled around, leaping up as she gave a huge smile at her close friend, and he wrapped her in a warm hug. After he greeted Kili and said hello to his mother, he returned to Y/N's side and stretched out his fur coat, draping half of it over her. She blushed and leaned her head against his shoulder, moving to sit closer to him as he wrapped an arm around her underneath the coat, smiling warmly at how she was cuddled against him, and his heart sighed with contentment.
