Thorin had not seen you in a long time. You were but a faint memory to him, and sometimes he wondered if he had dreamed you up to ease his loneliness many years ago. He'd forgotten your name by the time he arrived in Rivendell with his noble troupe of fellow dwarves, a wizard, and a hobbit, but then he saw you once more. Just a glimpse, a shimmer behind a veil it was, and just like that, you vanished from him once more. He would not let you escape his memory again, however, and so turned from his company, abandoning supper to find you. It was not hard, as you had barely strayed from where he first saw you, standing in a copse of trees by the edges of the courtyard of the palace. He quickly decended the stairs and approached you, noticing your stiff stance, how your head was tilted to the Western Seas, how you held your arms together as if you were cold despite how warm it was out.

He stepped up beside you and you turned to look at him with a gentle yet wary gaze. He bowed to you, something he rarely would ever do, and in a flurry of speech, began to speak to you of his memories, asking if you were but a dream, but you held up a smooth palm to cease his rambling and leaned down to speak to him at eye level. "I am no dream, my lord," you promised and took his hands in your own soft grip, "though for all I remember I might have been, once." He asked you what your dwelling in Rivendell meant, and you stood up again, put off by the question. Thorin watched as you took a step away from him, dropping his hands and once more holding your arms together as if to ward off a nonexistent chill in the air. His heart sank as you turned away from him, gaze turned distant and lonely, and he wished he had never said a word on the matter. A warm breeze fluttered your light dress and silky hair, and yet you shivered.

"You cannot really think I am here because I wish to be?"

A pause.

"I do not belong here."

Thorin dreaded what you were to say next, and as he'd expected, you ran away from him on swift feet, your final words carried to him along the summer winds...

"I do not belong anywhere."
