SAM's POV

Most of everyone had eaten their dinner and gotten seconds. Let me tell you, I might've been in my best evening attire but that did NOT stop a sista from getting her grub on! I ate so much food that I had a potbelly! Mmm-mm... anyway, my mama told me to bring the desserts into the living room and cut the pies in slices; I don't know why she couldn't have cut the pies already before the people came, but whatever.

"Diggy, can you help Sam with the desserts please?" Mom asks him.

He glanced at me as I got up from the table, hesitant to get up, but said: "Sure."

I really don't need assistance. I think my mom did that on purpose... she ain't slick. Trying to put us in the same space. Entering the kitchen, I threw away my paper plate once filled with food and began taking the aluminum foil off of the pies that sat on the counter. Diggy did the same. For a few seconds, it was awkwardly quiet, but I tried not to think about it. I continued uncovering the pies and smiled on the inside as the smell of the warm pastries filled the air.

"Did you bake these?"

"Psh, I don't bake. I only eat," I reply, not looking at him.

"Figures."

I walk to one of the kitchen drawers and get a knife. Finding a really sharp one, I walk back to my previous space ready to cut something.

"Aye! Aye!" Diggy stepped back with a scared look on his face and put his hands up in protest. I rolled my eyes.

"I wasn't gonna cut you... I'm not gonna cut you."

"Oh..."

Smh, this fool. I laugh a little to myself and begin cutting the apple crumble, peach, cherry, and sweet potato pies into eight equal pieces. Diggy watches from a distance. After I finish cutting everything, I put the knife in the sink and hand him one of the pies.

"You think you're able to handle taking the pies to the dining room for the guests?"

"Yeah..." He replies, still looking uneasy.

We took the pies to the dining room then my mom reminded me that she had some cookies baking. I went back into the kitchen with Diggy behind me and opened the oven to find the cookies black as coal as smoke filled the oven.

"Ugh." I grabbed a dish rag while fanning away the smoke and took the tray out of the oven. I backed up and for some reason, Diggy was standing right behind me. I bumped into him as I was standing up and some of the burnt cookies fell to the floor. "Ugh!" I yelled again.

"My bad," he says, looking at the burnt mess on the floor.

"Why were you--" as I was saying this, I forgot the pan was hot and held it with my naked hand. I yelped in pain, throwing the pan down on the counter.

"Shoot, Here-- Sam, rinse it with cool water." Diggy rushed to the sink and turned on the cold water. I held the palm of my hand under it and bit down on my bottom lip as it stung. Diggy managed to turn off and close the oven. The whole kitchen was smoky.

DIGGY's POV

"Where's your broom?"

"In the foyer closet..."

I walk to the closet near the front door, find the broom and dustpan, and sweep up the burnt cookies. I kinda feel like I caused this mess so I guess I should clean it up. I feel really stupid right now. I shake my head as I throw the burnt cookies into the kitchen garbage...

"Thanks." Sam rubs her hands softly together and looks around the floor, not really keeping eye contact with me.

"Yup... I just hope you don't cut me for real this time because I made you drop them--"

"Why you think I'm gonna cut you? Does everyone think I'm a mad black woman?!" Sam asks, seeming like she's offended.

"Depends who you ask," I half joke.

She throws the dish rag at me but I dodge it. Then she smiles at me. Why is she smiling?

"Guess they won't be having any cookies," she grins.

"Guess not..." I stuck my hands in my pockets awkwardly waiting for the next action.

"SAM! DIGGY! COME IN HERE WE HAVE AN ANNOUNCEMENT!" Sam's mom yells from the next room.

"Yay... I love announcements," she says with much sarcasm. By the way, that smile hasn't left her face yet. I still think she's up to something.
