A boy whistled as he had a bat over his shoulder in one hand, a rifle across his back as he had a bounce in his step walking through the trail that lead around the woods in the spring.

A biter heard him and growled at the Cuban boy, coming towards him as the blue eyes locked on the creature. He sighed a little twisting the bat in his hand before pulling back and slamming the wooden bat into the biters head and crushing its skull in one go.

"Ew, god your an old one, smell gross man," the boy gagged a little as he lifted his bat high and slammed it again on the biters head to kill it completely.

"Nadi, silv , it's clear," lance walked over to his truck, it was still in tack but now has dirt and blood covering the bottom and sides.

"Hi tio," his five year old niece popped up from the drivers side.

"How's Silvio doing?" Lance opened the back of his truck as it had a blue tarp over the top to hide his nephew.

The nine year old was sleeping in a thick sleeping back as he had a metal bottle full of water and a can of beans next to him in case he got hungry. He's had a fever for the past two days...

"He was coughing before," Nadia crawled to the backseats and opened the back window to rest her arms on while lance took the tarp off the back of the truck so he could sit with the boy.

"Hey bud, have you been drinking water?" Lance scooted on the truck and sat with him.

"Yea, a little," Silvio yawned as he move to lay against his uncle.

"I found a Walgreens and found some Tylenol and ibuprofen, it might be real bad allergies if you feel better tomorrow," Lance hugged him gently with a smile to hide his fears. It was too similar to his brother.

"It's just to hot outside lance," Silvio coughed and lance touched his forehead gently, he was burning, his face was pale and looked exhausted.

"I know man, I'm sweating like I'm in the kitchen with your Abuela and tia's," lance grinned patting his head playfully and went to crawl through the window back to Nadia.

"You stayed in the car right?" Lance closed the window behind him to let Silvio rest again.

Yep, I had a blanket over me and my book, I gave up on some of the words so I made my own story with the pictures," Nadia held up her book that lance stole for her, her bunny from home was buckled in the passengers seat.

"Silvio is going to get better right?" She asked quietly not looking up.

"I hope he does, maybe we can go see the ocean and have a beach day when he feels better," lance kissed the top of her head and grabbed the canned food be stored in the back seat.

"Alright, peaches or green beans?" Lance asked.

"Peaches!" She beamed brightly. He opened the can for her and handed his niece the fruit with a fork.

He looked over gently at Silvio who was asleep again, he was so worried about him, what if he turned into one of the biters? What if he attacked them? Lance inhaled a deep breath shaking those thoughts away, he's going to be fine, it won't come to that. But they needed better medicine, they needed a real bed and real shelter, fresh water, a warm meal.

"Hey guys, I think we should get driving again, I don't like being so far away from the town when I leave You alone," Lance hoped in the front seat as Nadia sat passenger.

"Silvio, come lay in the back kiddo," he called. His nephew looked at him surprised but got out of the truck to sit inside the back.

"I don't want to get you guys sick," silvio mumbled but lance handed him a mask he grabbed from the store.

"We'll be fine," he smiled brightly. Silvio agreed and put the mask over his face and pinched the nose part to keep it close to his face. He was aware of the similar symptoms that he had like his fathers, a fever or flu feeling.

Silvio looked at his uncle nervously, he knew just as much as lance knew, lance told him the truth, that his brother and the kids father turned into one of those things. He didn't need to say anything else before silvio knew that Lance put him out of his misery.

But they had no idea what happened to the rest of their family. His other uncle and aunts, his grandparents, lance wasnt close to them anymore though so he wasn't in a rush, and the kids were happy to be with their favorite uncle, he was young but lance was always like a 'mama' bear. He adored his niece and nephew, they adored him, they were always close, lance put in the most effort to see the kids.

Silvio was so confused why his youngest uncle never wanted to go home though... his father and aunt Veronica talked about their brother all the time but it never made sense why.

"Hey silv, there some crackers and orange juice in the bag I picked up for you, try eating a little more okay? I need you big and strong," lance snapped him out of his thoughts.

"Do you know where we're going?" Silvio asked as he reached over for the crackers. He was so hungry but it was hard to keep it in his stomach.

"Hopefully we'll run into people, we need real shelter, you need a real bed to rest in silv," lance drove out of the woods and back on the road as Nadia buckled herself in.

"Maybe there'll be kids our age too," Nadia smiled at the boys.

"Yea maybe, we all could use a little socializing again, might make each other crazy," lance teased and the kids laughed at him. He glanced at his nephew again in the mirror and he looked exhausted.

"We're going to be driving for a while man, take a nap if you need too, listen to your body," lance told him and Silvio nodded bringing the blanket up to his face and laid on the back seats.

Lance sighed softly as Nadia leaned against the arm rest between them, he touched her shoulder and she looked up with the infamous mcclain blue eyes many of his family shared. He brought the arm rest up and she crawled over the bench seat to lean against her uncle as he drove down the abandoned roads listening to the empty air around them.
