The Prom One Shot

"What about Thursday night?" You questioned, slowly losing patience, having already gone through the previous four days and having no luck.

Alyssa took a moment to think about what was planned in her very busy and hectic life until she turned back to you with a solemn expression that you had become used to over the rest of the conversation.

"I have debate club straight after class and then cheerleading practice. My mother is picking me up at half four and I need to bake six hundred cupcakes, so I doubt I'll even be getting any sleep," she sighed.

You ran a hand through your hair, not sure what other options there were seen as you knew she was busy Friday night too and the weekend wasn't an option as her mother would have her under lock and key.

"Can't you miss one practice?" You questioned. "You're already the best person out there, not that you even enjoy it."

She gave you an apologetic smile. "I really wish I could. I don't see the point in it, and I wouldn't even be part of the team if I got a say but my mother thinks that it will look good for college and will gain me popularity."

"Why do you need to bake so many cupcakes?" You questioned. "I thought your mum put you on a diet and anything with sugar or carbs was completely forbidden."

"It is forbidden," she said with a roll of her eyes. "My homecoming queen campaign is one of her main focuses currently. Supposedly it'll prove how good a mother she is if I win. She thinks that people are more likely to vote for me if I give them baked goods. I can't even bake but she believes that if I am not perfect at everything then it is my fault for having such a 'personality flaw'."

Times like these, forced you to face how hard it was to date someone like Alyssa Greene. You loved her more than anything but with her still in the closet and her mother having every characteristic of a successful dictator, there was little time that she got to herself. Her mother put her in every possible club and extracurricular, whilst also belittling everything she did until it was perfect in every possible way.

"I wish we could spend more time together," you said, knowing it wasn't a fault of hers.

You couldn't blame her for not wanting to be an open lesbian. It was a small town and there wasn't really anyone who was willing to be open with something they didn't understand. You just wished that she could accept herself and want to be out so that you could face the world together and get to spend time together. At most you got part of your lunch and free period before having the only connections being via phone. It was a hard way to keep a relationship.

"I wish we could too," she smiled softly. "I'm sorry."

"We'll find a way to be together."
