Six The Musical One Shot

It had taken months of lessons before you were able to make your way through a book, soon able to make your way through her writings and see the beauty and passion that Catherine held in her words. She said that you were a natural reader and picked it up very well, it was just a shame that your classes were coming to an end. Even though you worked with her every day, this was something special between the two of you and you had become fond of her company.

You learnt more than just how to read through your lessons; you had learnt more about Catherine and your heart longed for her, not that you had the confidence to admit such a thing to her. She was a woman of status, you were just her lady in waiting, nothing would come of that, and if you tried to pursue it, she could have you killed.

"I am so proud of how far you have come," Catherine smiled. "You even corrected my essay yesterday."

"It was a rather juvenile mistake," you commented, knowing you had no place to insult her writing seen as you had only just learnt how to form any words yourself with ink and parchment.

"And the fact that you can comment on that makes me very happy," she said. "You're a very good student, alas I have little more I can teach you in the ways of the written word."

You smiled to her. "I am just grateful that you have taught me so much. It is going to be shame to no longer spend so much time with you."

Catherine avoided your eye for a second before offering you a shy look. Although she was married to the King, she didn't love him, it was simply a marriage through not being able to say no in fear of what he would do to her.

"I am sure we can find some excuse to spend more time together, I must say that it has brought me a fair amount of joy to spend time with you. If it were a different life, I might be able to say I would say we were meant to be together."

"I wish it could be in this one."

You both hesitated, your eyes lingering on each other for a moment. Your fingers moved towards each other on the table until the touched. Even with such a small gesture, your heart pounded against your chest and for once you felt happy that maybe your future could be bright even if it could never be public.
