personality        sakuya is a resourceful and intelligent man. his charisma gains the respect of his enemies and friends. at the same time, it also leads to him being favored by his superiors, namely the safety commission. he has a strong sense of loyalty and a surprisingly small amount of trust. sakuya believes that it has to be earned, and there's nobody anymore that has the right to know him like that anymore. as the hero public safety commission's puppet, he puts their wishes above his own, even stating that if they wanted him to kill someone close to him, he'd have no choice but to listen. the main point is that his body isn't his own, it belongs to the commission. however, as time goes on, his loyalty to the commission falters and he slowly stops listening to their orders. due to his memories getting wiped, sakuya genuinely believes that he doesn't have a family. any attempts to make him remember his identity as reiji will result in failure, as he'll avoid mentions of it solely because it makes his head hurt.

he has a sense of duty that stems from him being an adult. sakuya understands that all ua students choose to train by their own will, but he still feels like it's his duty to protect them. in his eyes, they're only children and need to be protected. as an adult, it's only natural for him to put their lives above his. similarly, sakuya finds a lot of flaws within the hero system despite being a piece of propaganda for it. he believes that if some of these villains were saved as children, their fates could've been different. he loves his class enough to the point to sacrifice his life for them without a second thought. he enjoys watching them interact with each other because, to him, it's a sign of youth. as part of his image, sakuya's very good at dealing with children. the commission made a lot of merchandise modeled after him and he's constantly in the media; he's a bit famous!

it's widely agreed that sakuya's an eccentric person. he's known for being a bothersome person, especially to his students. it seems that he always wants to know what they're up to or what the latest drama is. he loves to see them grow, so he'll often set up random situations for them to fight him—though, it's mainly him dressing up in a random halloween costume to force them to indulge him. he's overly curious about people's quirks and will ask invasive questions. sakuya enjoys a good challenge and gets overly excited when his enemies or students put up a fight against him. he brags about his skill in battle and enjoys taunting his opponent; he sometimes dances around while they try to hit him because he finds it to be fun.

background       born as ichiya reiji, he was the older brother of two younger sisters. his quirk first manifested while he was in class playing with friends, his shockwaves caused the corner of the classroom to crumble. he later enrolled into ua as a teen. reiji got close to his fellow classmates easily due to his charismatic nature, namely aizawa shōta, yamada hizashi, and shirakumo oboro. the four were eager to be heroes together. reiji specifically enjoyed bothering shōta and grew incredibly fond of him. after oboro died, he was distraught but worked even harder to be a hero in order to honor him. at the age of 23, while he was on a mission to capture a villain, reiji died. the combined damage of the surrounding debris and the villain's attacks left his body completely crushed—except for his head.

members of the hero public safety commission reached the scene before first responders could, and they separated his head from his body. to everyone, ichiya reiji was killed tragically, but they had another plan in mind. over the course of the next 2 years, they engineered a cyborg body and put reiji's head on it. they sent his family away and changed his name to kusunoki sakuya. as long as sakuya had his cyborg body, he could be repaired if he got injured. it was a great way to boost morale and trust in heroes. his memories as reiji were erased; he doesn't remember his high school days, oboro's death, or even the fact that he has a family. if the safety commission tells him to jump, he asks how high. soon enough, sakuya became the teacher for class 2-b at ua high school.

relationship to shōta       as reiji, him and shōta were classmates. they shared intimate feelings with one another. reiji was the more outgoing one of the two and typically was considered a bad influence, but shōta didn't mind as it was secretly a lot of fun being with him.

as sakuya, the two share a professional relationship. shōta is uncomfortable with the fact that reiji—now sakuya—died and came back "wrong," and tries to avoid him at all costs. it's hard to do that when sakuya still bothers him like before, but he doesn't have that right tone in his voice when he calls his name. having his memories wiped, sakuya has no clue as to why shōta avoids him, instead assuming that he just doesn't like him. tldr: sakuya doesn't remember and shōta doesn't like it.
