From the moment you can first define who you are
You're told you can be anything
Do anything
Be whatever you want
You're told to find creative ways to express yourself
To do what makes you happy.
So why does that change when puberty hits?
It changes, for girls, at least
'Don't do that!'
'What are you wearing?!'
'That shirt is too small.'
It goes from embracing who you are
Loving how you look
To having to hide behind phony screens,
To physically having to hide yourself.
Lots of girls like to express themselves through
Material things,
Make-up,
Jewelry,
And the most controversial,
Clothes.
We get blamed for things that are out of our control, getting in trouble because our genes don't fit in our jeans.
Because our fruits can't fit in one basket.
Our beautiful bodies with life bearing potential
Get ridiculed because they decide to take shape
In order to reveal an intelligent young lady.
They tell us to be confident, but then shame us when we do as they say.
Filing out complaint after complaint.
'I don't like superficial girls.'
'Why does she dress like that?'
'I prefer girls without makeup.'
Shaming the ones who only wish to embrace themselves and break the societal boundaries.
So many comments filled with hate because no one  can appreciate themselves.
How can there be genuine love when you don't even have any love for yourself?
In a society that lives for the depravity of its fellow members, we are free yet controlled by the suffocating reality that it will eventually abandon us.
Leaving us to writhe in our own agony.
