I'm an Ushijima... Giving up is not an option! ❞
— Atsushi Ushijima to himself.

Atsushi Ushijima ✧˚

Atsushi Ushijima (Japanese: 牛島 Ushijima Atsushi) was a first-year student at Karasuno High. He was one of the boys' volleyball club's wing spikers. In his third-year, he became the team's ace. As of 2018, he is married to Tobio Kageyama, changing his name to Atsushi Kageyama (Japanese: 影山 Kageyama Atsushi). He's also a member of Schweiden Adlers, a Division 1 team in the V. League. As of 2021, he became a member of Argentina's National Team and participated in the 2021 Olympics.

He is the younger brother of Wakatoshi Ushijima.

APPEARANCE:
Atsushi has dark brown hair and olive colored eyes. He is 179 cm (5' 10"). Which is the average height for a volleyball player.

While on court, Atsushi wears a standard black and orange Karasuno High uniform emblazoned with the number thirteen. He also wears white athletic shoes.

At other times, Atsushi dresses in the Karasuno High uniform, which consists of a classic black gakuran, white collared shirt, and black pants.

PERSONALITY:
Atsushi is mostly emotionless and doesn't really care about anything. Though once you get to know him he can be really caring. He is also blunt and doesn't sugarcoat his words.

BACKGROUND:
As a young child, Atsushi had always admired his older brother, Wakatoshi, as a volleyball player and his skills. His dream was to go to nationals with his brother at his side. However, it all changed during his third-year at Shiratorizawa Junior High when he decided to go to Karasuno instead of Shiratorizawa.

It was then that he made the decision that he didn't want to be just like Wakatoshi, he wanted to be stronger than him and even surpass him as a volleyball player.

STATISTICS:

High School Statistics

Power: 4/5.
Jumping: 4/5.
Stamina: 5/5.
Game Sense: 5/5.
Technique: 4/5.
Speed: 5/5.

Atsushi is a good overall player. Even though he is a wing spiker, it is shown that he can set the ball for his teammates like a setter.

Jumping Reach: 345 cm.

SKILLS:
• Spiking: Like his older brother, Atsushi has powerful spikes. His spikes tend to be strong and consistent. Because he is ambidextrous, he tends to switch hands when he spikes, making it hard for his opponents to know which hand he would be using. He eventually learns how to do straight shots due to Bokuto's teaching.

• Serving: Atsushi has a powerful jump serve that is equally as powerful as his brother's, as noted by Yamagata during their game against Shiratorizawa.

• Receiving: Atsushi is shown to be very capable and consistent in this area. It it noted that like his older brother, he tends to not move while passing and usually adjusts his leg position instead of making full steps.

• Strategist: Atsushi is good at reading his opponents and finding their weak point. As proven when it is revealed how closely he had studied Shiratorizawa throughout his junior high days.

RELATIONSHIPS:

Tobio Kageyama: Kageyama is the only first-year that Atsushi has grown close too despite them being polar opposites. Atsushi recognizes him as an amazing setter and vice versa. They end up dating and eventually get married. They also play on the same Division 1 team.

Shoyo Hinata: Atsushi recognizes Hinata's talents as a player. He also admires his determination and how he never gives up no matter how hard something is. Though at times, he often finds himself wanting to throw a volleyball at his head for his stupidity.

Karasuno High: Atsushi cares for his team and respects his seniors that are apart of it. He comes up to their defense when his older brother calls them a weak team after their lost against Aoba Johsai. He believes that every one of his teammates has their own unique talents.

OTHER SCHOOLS:

Tsutomu Goshiki: Upon their first meeting, Atsushi resented Goshiki due to him always sucking up to his older brother. He found him pathetic that Goshiki saw him as a threat since he was Wakatoshi's younger brother even though he went to a different school. Following Shiratorizawa's defeat against Karasuno, the two make amends and become friends. During Karasuno's match against Inarizaki, it is shown that Goshiki is cheering on Atsushi when he is able to make a straight shot past Suna and Osamu.

Tōru Oikawa: Atsushi knows Oikawa from his matches against his older brother. He often gets annoyed because Oikawa constantly compares him to Wakatoshi, calling him "Little Ushijima" every time they cross paths. After Karasuno's victory against Aoba Johsai during the Spring Inter-High, he promises Oikawa that he'll beat Wakatoshi and go to nationals for him.

Bokuto Kōtarō: Bokuto was Atsushi's mentor during the training camp who taught him how to do straight shots and helped him how to use both of his hands equally. During Karasuno's match against Shiratorizawa, it is revealed that Bokuto is the new person that Atsushi admires when he reflects on what Bokuto had taught him during the training camp and eventually takes on his volleyball form during the match.

FAMILY:

Takashi Utsui: When he was only a child, his parents divorced and his father moved overseas. He would often watch his father train his older brother into loving volleyball as much as he did. Atsushi would spend hours watching his father and his older brother train.

Wakatoshi Ushijima: Wakatoshi was the one who taught Atsushi how to play volleyball once he got older. Atsushi would often practice with him and aspired to become exactly like him. He claimed that Wakatoshi was his hero in volleyball. Though, as time went on, Atsushi realized that he didn't want to become exactly like his brother, but he wanted to be better than him as a volleyball player and wanted to be strong enough to surpass him.

QUOTES:

❝ I didn't want to be known as Toshi-nii's little brother. I came to Karasuno because I wanted to beat him. ❞
— To Kageyama.

❝ I'm so pathetic. I don't deserve to be related to one of the top three aces in the country. ❞
— To himself, after Karasuno's lost.

❝ I don't care what you say to me. Criticize me, ridicule me, I don't give a shit! But don't you dare call my teammates weak. They all did their best out there! Especially my seniors! The only reason we didn't win was simply because we weren't strong enough! ❞
— To Wakatoshi.

❝ But there is one thing. What you said about Aoba Johsai, you're wrong. It isn't just Oikawa who's strong. It's the entire team. They aren't the top four in the prefecture for show. One day, Nii-san. You'll come across someone who's better than you, and that person might be your own brother. ❞
— To Wakatoshi.

❝ Oikawa-san, there's not a lot of players out there that I respect. The only players I respected before were my older brother and Bokuto-senpai. But... I respect you, Oikawa-san! So I promise I'll defeat Toshi-nii and Shiratorizawa for you and your team! ❞
— To Oikawa, after Karasuno's victory.

❝ The fact that you find me threatening even though I'm playing for a different team is pathetic, Bowl Cut. This is exactly why I didn't attend Shiratorizawa. I don't want to be exactly like my brother. I want to be better. But if you want to spend your whole high school years in Toshi-nii's shadow, then that's fine with me. ❞
— To Goshiki.

❝ I always held back my power because I was afraid of what others thought of me. My seniors in junior high would always resent me because they thought I was trying to be like Toshi-nii. Karasuno... they didn't treat me like dirt. They welcomed me. So I have to swallow my pride and my admiration for Toshi-nii in order to win! ❞
To himself.

❝ I'm going to prove to everyone that I'm not just "Ushijima Wakatoshi's little brother!" I'm going to make a name for myself! ❞
— To himself.

❝ I've spent my entire volleyball career trying and trying to prove to everyone that I'm not just your brother! They constantly compared me to you everyday! Karasuno... they didn't do that! They didn't care if I was related to the famous Ushijima Wakatoshi, as long as I could help them move forward, that's all that mattered! Do you have any idea what it's like living in your damn shadow? News flash, Wakatoshi, you don't have a fucking clue! ❞
— To Wakatoshi, during their joust.

❝ You guys lost because you placed all your attacks onto Toshi-nii. You didn't connect with one another. I'm just a first-year but all of you know me personally. Don't look down on your opponents, you never know if they're the ones who will come up on top. ❞
— To Shiratorizawa, after Karasuno's victory.

❝ I'll make you proud, nii-san. ❞
— To Wakatoshi, after Karasuno's victory.

❝ I would stop trying to impress us. We have a certain orange-haired midget on our team who can jump almost as high as you. You're nothing special. ❞
— To Hoshiumi, during the All-Japan Youth Camp.

❝ I'm an Ushijima... Giving up is not an option! ❞
— To himself, during Karasuno's match against Inarizaki.
