His only two friends are Maggie Loris, a girl with a broken family, Syd Phillis, whose ADHD gets him into more trouble than his family can afford, and his older brother, Alexander. But when a woman stumbles from the nearby campground, raving about her friend being destroyed by a mythical creature known as the Kelpie, Will is no longer in one of his books.
