The colt blinked. His wet little head looked up at me. Sam came over, holding out his hand. "He's-. He's magical." I look at the newborn, wet and fluffy. I cannot see him properly at the moment, but I will. "Beauty, you'll have to look after him. You will have to be his mother." Sam says, standing up and patting me. I nicker. The colt shakes his head and try's to stand up, only stumbling. I watch as the foal slowly begins to stand, and takes slow, wobbly steps towards me. I urge him to drink, as I had a false pregnancy with Hawk. (That's kinda not possible but story logic :-)) *in the morning* The colt, who I've decided to call Ranger, was a dark black, with three white socks and one stocking. He had sky blue eyes. His mother had passed, and so now he is mine. I quietly grazed and he pranced around beside me. He tumbled over into the long grass, and I lifted my head. His head popped up and he nickered. "Ranger, be careful." I muttered. "Beauty!" Sam called. I nudged Ranger forward, walking towards the gate. "Hey, girl. How's the little one?" He asked, patting me and Ranger. "He's a pretty boy. He'll make a good farm horse one day, I'm sure of it."

As the months went by, Ranger grew and grew. He no longer needed my milk but still needed aid knowing right from wrong. He is now 1, and I am now 6. He never knew his mother and I still have no intention of telling him. He will not be gelded. He still held his beautiful midnight black coat. One day, a terrible storm came. This was Ranger's first major storm, and even the pigs were locked up tight in their pens. Sam nor any of his family had time to move us, but we made our way to the stables. It hailed and rained all night. And Ranger slept through it all. But in the morning we realised the every field of crops had been destroyed. The families money, food and life was gone. They had no food nor any feed for us and bore no money to help themselves. Sam had only one choice. He sold off three of his finest cows, and then turned to us. We were his only way of earning money without losing anything important. I understood.

His sheep, cows, pigs and chickens were all important. Our jobs he could do by himself. "Beauty, I'm sorry. I love you and you've brought my family great happiness, but now you must go. Poor like Jack will have to go as well, and he'll stay with you. I'll make sure that's what happens." He runs his hand over my muzzle. "I wish I had another choice, Beauty." He said, as if he had been stabbed in the heart. He hugged me, and sobbed. "The kids are gonna miss you, we all love you so so much. And little Jack, well, he was a member for a long time. Poor Astro. I just wish she could've seen what a beautiful colt her foal has become. And it's all thanks to you." Astro had passed during the foaling, it was tragic. The little while I had known her I had become good friends with her. She was wise, beautiful and very free-spirited. She held qualities like my mother had, before. Before her death. I nudged Ranger, who came over to farewell Sam. "I'll miss you little guy, I hope you make a family proud, just like your mother and Amazon." He says, smiling.

It was not long before we were sold. A fine young mare and her stunning colt were at hand of any willing to pay the money. And plenty were. Today was the day that our new owners would arrive. We were anxious. It wasn't all that new to me, but it was new to Ranger. I guess we'll just wait and see...
