Chapter Two

A space as large as this should never look this way. Horses, everywhere, dead. The soil plastered with red as if it had rained blood. I lowered my head. Each horse had lacerations on their feet, and their hooves were swollen and bloody. They were chased, over a long distance, too. Most horse's had a bullet through the neck or head, but some were repeatedly shot in the stomach and rear end. Foal's laid drained from their blood, their young lives seeping into the ground as I watched. They'd been here a while, but their bodies were still fresh.

I looked over them all.

"Who would do this? I've met an awful lot of bad people in my life, but no human would ever do such a thing."

Spirit snorted. "Humans are nothing but scum. They don't see us as beasts they see us as slaves."

I turn to him, annoyed.

"It's not like that." And with that comment, I had ended the discussion.

We walked back to Ranger. He was now grazing on the grass beside the pond. "What was it?" He questioned, raising his head and pricking his ears. "Nothing, come, we have to move."

And so our journey began again. It was not easy to find herds, now that Kuno was a potential threat to our species. We were looking for a stallion by the name of Atrao. He claimed the old homelands of the old city, crushed by enemy force and deserted weeks later. Atrao is a strong stallion, large and well-known for his large herd.

We had found two stallions already, but they were not fond of the idea of releasing help to us. So we were empty handed at the moment. The stallions had simply apologised and said they had no help to give.

We came to a well-structured hill, leaning high and steep into the sky above us. I was in no mood to canter, I was just going to plod all the way up.

All the way.

Spirit was slightly behind me, nudging me up. We could hear a rumbling sound, and the rocks atop the hill began to rattle, dislodge, and fall.

The rocks came flying down, some mid-air, some rolling and others bouncing like rubber balls.

We began to canter up the hill, running against the backfire of rocks and pebbles. We finally reached the top and Ranger looked down below us. It was steep, rocky and dangerous.

"What the hell is going on?" Spirit muttered, sniffling the patches of grass.

I turned my head to the side, peeking into the distance. "Hey, what is that?" I asked, before the rumbling became a roar and the ground began to tremble beneath us. Flashes of colour flew over nearby paths and ditches, quickly approaching our position.

"Is that?"

"Oh my god."

The dance like movement flew down below us, multiple coat colours flying like a rainbow down around the curved valley. It was it.

Atrao's herd.
