Raising the hammer to shoulder level, Gally hammered the nail into the plank of wood, looking at Thomas the entire time.

Thomas shifted uncomfortably looking at the ground.

"What's your problem?" Thomas snapped, annoyed by his constant staring.

He watched Gally slam his hammer down the table and laid it aside whilst taking a few steps towards him.

"Listen to me, shuck-face." The boy accused Thomas, pointing fingers at him. "I've seen you before. Something's fishy about you showing up here, and I'm going find out what."

A surge of heat pulsed through Thomas's veins. "I've never seen you before in my life. I have no idea who you are, and I couldn't care less," he spat.

Gally snickered, a short burst of laughter mixed with a snort. Then his face grew serious, his eyebrows slanting inward. "I've ... seen you, shank. I saw you during the Changing."

''The changing?''

''Yes''

I wipe the beads of sweat off my forehead with the back of my hand as I exit the Homestead. I noticed Thomas and Gally arguing.

''Oh and you better get the hell away from Alex," Gally threatened, his voice suddenly with a deathly calm.

Thomas refused to break eye contact but decided to say nothing.

Being me, I decided to intervene before anything results in something worse, but they were too busy to notice me. They were fully immersed in their conversation.

''What are you talking about? I haven't done anything wrong or anything to-

''Hey, what's going on?'' I asked quizzically.

''I bet your first meal from Frypan that Ben that he'll say he's seen ya', too."

He reached out and poked Thomas in the chest. Thomas held his hands out in defense.

''Hey!''

I pushed my way in between them and held them both at arm's length.

''Gals, it's his first day here, leave him alone'' I scolded him and he scoffs loudly, rolling his eyes.

''Thomas, you can take a break'' I sighed. He nodded his head and left. From the looks of his face I could tell he needed one.

''You too Gal, you need a break. Hand the hammer over," I added.

''I'm fine, I just need to finish this'' Gally said, trying to keep the irritation out of his voice and picked up his work.

"Okay I don't like it when you're like this, what's wrong? What did you say to him?''

''Nothing'' He yelled back. I could tell he already starting to get frustrated; his eyes sitting on the table rather than me.

''I need to know what you said to him''

''Listen'' Gally turned around ''if you want this table done by the end of the day just leave me to it!'' he stormed out while shoving a couple of Gladers out of the way.

I scowled, massaging my temples, deciding to leave him alone for a while so he can cool down.

I decided to look for Thomas then. I coughed him walking towards a tree and slid down until he sat on the ground.

I walked towards the kitchen area and asked Frypan to make a sandwich for Thomas. The poor guy must be starving, and Gally wasn't helping either.

''I didn't think you would care about the new greenie'' Frypan said handing me a plate full of food.

''If I don't do it, nobody else will''

As I walked towards Thomas, a metallic clicking sound from the branches above grabbing his attention. He craned his neck looking for the source.

''Beetle blades," I said.

Thomas turned to his right, ''A beetle what?''

''Beetle blade, won't hurt you unless you're stupid enough to touch one of them." I said.

''Anything else I need to know about this place?''

''Here you go,'' I handed him the plate with the sandwich and baby carrots.

Thomas nodded at me and gave me a small smile, blushing a little.

''Thanks''

''Let me know if you need anything else. Listen, I'm sorry you're going through all of this. It's only been three days and it's just ... there is so much going on in this place and I—I wanted to make sure you were okay.''

Thomas shook his head and started to eat. ''Don't be sorry...'' he mumbled.

''So,'' I said as I wiped my sweaty hands down my jeans.

''So, why is everyone calling me Greenie?'' he asked ''You know my name.''

I shrugged and sat down next to him. ''That's just the way it is''

After what seemed like an eternity, we finished talking. I waved Thomas goodbye and walked towards Homestead.

When I had first met him, I thought him to be quite annoying but, that was until now that I was getting to know him. It's not like he could tell me about his family or older life but, it was something.
