chapter 3:
my summoner.
Kaz

Nyx was distraught.

Inej saw this possible Sun Summoner as a Saint, and although I highly doubt one exists, Nyx seemed to believe it enough to where her shadows sliced through the trees in the area and she sobbed into her hands.

That was an hour ago.

"Why is she so upset? This is a miracle," Inej expressed to me.

"Perhaps you have different versions of what a miracle is," I told her, our voices low as to not upset her further as she frantically walked back and forth in her room, thinking of who knows what.

Clearly, this may effect the job.

"Kaz," Inej said in a warning tone.

"What?"

"Don't."

"I have no idea what you're talking about."

"I know that look. You're not leaving her here," She told me as I avoided her.

"If she reacts that way to Alina Starkov, she will jeopardize-"

"If you want to know if she'll risk this mission, ask her that yourself," Inej walked out of my office, and I clenched my jaw as I stared across to her room.

I never asked about her past because I learned to trust her, and she learned to trust me. Nyx gave me plenty of reasons, at first, to not let her into the Dregs and to leave her to fight for herself in this cruel world. It was only when she awoke with shadows from the palms of her hands and summoning them back into herself that I knew we needed her. I knew that no Shadow Summoner would have been let go, and she had her reasons to flee.

Meaning she had a price on her head.

But in Ketterdam, no one paid much attention to what the King and Queen wanted, and a whisper of her never escaped.

"Kaz," Nyx said my name before I could even knock.

"Come in."

I pushed the door open to see her leaning against the wall of her bed, hand resting on her knee as she stared out the window.

"I don't believe too much in Saints, but I always thought that any force out there wouldn't allow a Sun Summoner to be born," She expressed, dried tears clear on her pale cheeks.

"There's no doubt he has her now. And we're all going to pay the price for it."

"Who?" I asked, and her hand clenched into a fist.

"General Kirigan," She let out a shaky breath.

You're angry.

Yet terrified.

"He's made a reputation of himself. Every Grisha trusts him with their life. . .none of them would believe me. I was blind to it all. I thought he-" She stopped herself.

"Did he hurt you?" I didn't know where that came from, as she even looked at me with slight shock evident in her brown eyes.

"More than the world will ever know."

She was strong. Holding in all of the pain that this man had inflicted on her, and proclaiming that the Grisha she worked with would never believe her. He's made himself that trustworthy.

I felt myself wanting to get closer to her, to ask her more, but restrained myself as my hand clenched around the cane.

"You can have your revenge," I told her, meeting her gaze.

"Tear him apart, piece by piece, and throw him to the volcra if you wish. But I need to know that I have my Shadow Summoner one hundred percent of the way until then," She looked shocked, her eyes wide and a light mist of tears formed over them as a smiled.

"You always will."

Wooo!! Another consistent update! I hope you've enjoyed this chapter. Obviously, Nyx and Kaz's relationship will be slow-burn, but there will obviously be some fluffy moments between the two.
