Get Rid of Writers/Readers Block!

Let's face it, we've all experienced some sort of block in our lives. Whether if we're a writer, just trying to get a book off the ground, or a reader who just can't seem to find the right book.

Trust me when I say this, I've been there. And I've done that.

Writing is hard. Finding the right book that clicks with you is difficult. But does that mean that we're just going to lie down and give up? Of course not! We wouldn't have the great writers of our time if we did.

But the question still stands: how do we get out of this hole of nothingness?

Well, I've created a list of 6 ways that writers and readers can apply in their lives that can help them get out of the dreadful pit of blocks.

---

1. Be actively trying to get out of the writers/readers block!

Honestly, this should be obvious, but it's a good place to start. If you have writers/readers block, don't just leave it! The passion for whatever your writing will die away. Though I've heard that stepping back from a project to clear your mind is a good idea, this is something entirely different. Walking away from your project/search for a good book will only lead to you not wanting to do it anymore. If you want to get out, you need to be actively trying to change your behavior.

2. Don't be afraid to try something new.

It doesn't matter if you're a writer or a reader - step out of your comfort zone! Try writing something that scares you. Read something you would never have considered even picking up. Stepping out of our comfort zone allows our brains to experience something different, and that could be just the thing you needed to get you out of your hole.

3. Attend conferences.

(I'm gonna be straight with you guys, I just got back from a writers conference [Teen Author Boot Camp, WOOT WOOT] that started at 7 am this morning. It's what inspired me to do this. Also XxDarkAngelxX26's inspiring message. Thank you for that, btw).

Conferences are a great way to connect with other writers and readers! It's like saying a fresh set of eyes helps to get the juices flowing when you write. When you're around new people and surrounded by the things you love, I promise that those changes will help open your mind!

4. Search your local library for ideas.

Ah... Libraries. Home to thousands of book titles, fierce librarians obsessed with keeping the room dead silent, and the setting of cheesy romances that I can never put down. It's also an amazing place for ideas.

If you're a reader, don't be afraid to stroll through the aisles at random. Look for books covers and titles that pop out to you. Skim the bios of authors and read the blurb to the books. You'd be surprised by how quickly you'll be able to pull yourself out of that readers block. Take a risk and get that book you think looks pretty!

If you're a writer, libraries are excellent locations to sit and think. Bring your laptop, phone, or notebook and find a comfy chair to sit in. Stare out the window for a little while - no one's going to judge you, I promise - and ignore the world. Let your mind wander while it's surrounded by the ideas of thousands of other authors. I would almost swear on my life that the author's soul in their novels, stacked neatly on the shelves, will help you.

5. Fresh air and exercise is your friend.

Don't give me that look. I know how much you lay around scrolling through Wattpad looking for fanfiction or smut. Put down the device and go on a walk! Oxygen will flow into your brain and help you tear your writers/readers block apart. If possible, go on a walk through town or to the park. (Psst, PokemonGo is a great excuse to leave the house!)

6. Do/Find something that you love!

Now, this is something I can swear my life to: when you do what you love, passion will light you on fire. I've discovered that when I do something that makes me happy, my creative juices flow better. I've found that I love plants. (Seriously. House plants are my best friends now. Dale [my funeral plant] and Reyna [my ranunculus] always cheer me up.) Watering and taking care of them help boost - not only my self-esteem - but my creative thought process.

Plants may not be your thing, and that's okay. We all enjoy different things! If you love to like to paint, PAINT! If running is your thing, RUN! If baking pies make you feel awesome, BAKE PIES! If wearing your black lacy underwear helps, WEAR IT!

Writing and reading don't have to be something that we struggle with. (Especially writing in my case). We can jump out of these slumps and get to work! Scribbling powerful words on a page or indulging in a good book isn't something that we should push aside just because we can't find the right fit for us. Everyone is different and, hey, if my tips didn't help you, there are plenty more ideas out there! Just follow step one and everything will work out the way it should.

Trust me.
