couldn't believe what
was happening.

years that pasted by,
german bombs fell like
stars from the skies on
the outskirts of paris
for the first time.

terrified people fled
the city in any way
they could. but deep
into the countryside, the
war still felt far away.

until this morning, when
she was sipping her camomile
tea calmly while she sat near the
lavender garden with her ever so
domineering mother-in-law, to
then instead hearing chopin play,
the dreadful defeat of their beloved
country to nazi germany.

tears started to spill from the
colorful irises her husband said
he once loved as hope started to
drain the whole country like red.

after the speech of the loss
of their country, it was rumored
that german regiments were to come
to the suburbs of marseilles. immediately swarming, german soldiers were billeted
to live in the houses posted for them.

only in a matter of hours,
a pair of ocean, blue eyes pierced
through her aching heart at the double,
glass doors of the entrance to where
her and her husband called home.

silk, blonde hair shone in the
bright sun on this dreadful day.
yet, a kind smile grew on his lips
and for one second [ your name ]
thought that it was francis.

"my name is ludwig beilschmidt,"
his big, black boots kissed the
beautiful, indigo carpet with the
intention of politeness when her
mother-in-law thought the opposite.
"thank you for allowing me to stay,
i look forward to living here."

his eyes soon looked at the grandfather
clock that ticked to every second of french time. but, as he changed the hour hand ahead, [ your name ] sensed the heartbreak in her husband's mother, madam claudette bonnefoy, now with every minute their lives were changing because of the war.

"i apologize for the inconvenience,
but we're all to be on german time.
i mustn't be late." he stated and was
soon led to his room by the maid.
after he descended up the grand
staircase, the older woman fell to
her knees and silently held back her
tears for all that she loved and had
was slipping from her grasp.

"to hell if i have live

she cursed into
the cold air.

[ your name ] kneed
down to the height of her

comforting her, she too

opening her eyelids slowly, she was
sitting quietly next to the glistening

of lavender and bliss calmed her nerves, however, the married woman couldn't
help but think of the german soldier who
she was ordered to stay clear away
from by her madam claudette.

[ your name ] sat still on the soft
grass, and in her hand held the petite
journal that spoke of the words she
yearned to say to her husband despite
the lack of his current whereabouts.

"bonjour," [ your name ]

"may i ask for your name?" the
german, who had lived amongst
them for the past three months,
sat under the old, willow tree next
her not in a uniform but in a simple
white flannel, dark brown pants,
and in the same polite smile he
had the first time he saw her,
which she didn't return back.

"[ your name ] bonnefoy."
she quietly answered back.
continuing to write the words
of love in her notebook, ludwig's
eyes wander to the gleaming
stream of the pond that put
his mind at ease.

"what a lovely name. . ."
he said with genuineness.
the french girl's cheeks
flushed a light shade of pink
since not even her husband
told her that before.

"it's a v-very common name . ."
she denied his compliment with
a slight shutter. however, he only
hummed in response while he
combed his hand through his
dashing, blonde hair.

"well, you have a very beautiful
house, madam bonnefoy." the charming
soldier spoke out as he admired the
exquisite architect of the estate. it's
diamond chandeliers to it's enchanting gardens, she would agree that the
mansion was truly a work of art.

"it isn't mine," she stated
with almost a laugh. "it belongs
to my mother-in-law."

"ah, you're married?" ludwig finally
saw the elegant, crystallized ring that
she wore around her fourth finger. birds
flew under the light, blue sky as the more
they talked the more the two felt nostalgia
from what they both had before the chaos
and riot that led them to meet.

"yes, he's a soldier for the french
army." [ your name ] saw the clouds
and thought that francis was maybe
looking at the same ones. straightening
her pure, white dress, she turned her
head to the german, and finally gave
a faint smile back. "how about
you? are you married?"

ludwig nodded, but held in his urge
to tell the real truth with what he was about
to say. "oui," he sighed out into the lovely aroma of flowers. "been married for three years, been a soldier for three years."

"she must miss you then." [ your name ] continued to write into the blank pieces
of parchment. the calm air soothed their damaged souls from what they missed
and lost. even if this moment wouldn't
last forever, they lived very bit of it.

the soldier could only deny the angelic,
french girl's statement. "i wouldn't think so." he gazed softly into her [ color name ] eyes.
the comforting air as two people from opposite sides who were suppose to be enemies, found themselves where the flowers bloomed and peace for some time in this war.

one afternoon, a french

classical music vocalized with the

while they ate their dinner.

sitting perfectly straight in

bitterly. fine silverware and

"why did you marry him?"
the girl was terribly confused
by madam claudette's sudden
behavior towards her.

"was it the land?" her mother-in-law
inquired with such venom in her loud
voice. "your father lost all of his, so he
sent you to look for someone else."

she put down her cup of tea with
a sigh. "my father was dying," her
words reminisced to her youth thinking
about the man that meant so much to her.
"he wanted me to find a good man."

"a wealthy man." madam scoffed
as she ate her roasted chicken.

"what did i do this time?"
[ your name ] simply asked in
a calm tone. madam bonnefoy's
face expressed the anger
towards her son's wife.

tension began to release into the
echoing, dining room. taking another
sip out of her wine glass, the mother-in-law glanced at her daughter-in-law. "i see everything that goes on in this house."

the girl realized what she
was implying; it was the german
soldier. "please, he only asked

built up from the pit of her stomach.
"what do you expect me to do? stay
confined in my bedroom?"

"i expect you to be a faithful wife!"
his mother shouted with a cold voice.
[ your name ] couldn't believe what
she was hearing. "faithful?" she questioned
the word with such wonder. "i've been

the worried mother couldn't help

her voice radiated with heat of the war
and the sadness that she might not see
the child she loved and raised ever again.

"THEN HOW COULD

"when i see them, i want to

claudette cried out with the
hatred she's held in her lost soul.
her colored red lips formed into
a frown, taking the last drop of
her wine and shattering the glass

despair soon clouded
madam claudette's mind with

ludwig's brother?" the prussian man
send a warm smile back to her. "yes,
i've come far to deliver a letter for you."

her heart was beating rapidly
to every second, was it a letter from
ludwig? "a letter? oh please! come
inside and rest, i'll have the maid
make us some dinner."

"that's very kind of you,
mademoiselle. but unfortunately,
i won't be able to stay. i have to catch
a train go to austria to meet roderich,
who i'm sure ludwig talked about?"

"oh yes, ludwig did speak
about him." she remembered
about the austrian brother who
married a hungarian woman and
became a music composer.

"but, that's a shame," the girl
somewhat disappointed that she
wouldn't get to know the person
that ludwig always talked about
before he left. "but please, do
call me [ your name ]."

"why of course, [ your name ]."
gilbert said to the woman his little
brother had loved so much. the blonde's sayings were speaking the truth, she really
was beautiful and kind. grabbing the letter
out of his pocket, he saw sparkles in her
eyes once she saw it. 'they really must've
been truly in love.' he thought.

her fingers traced the plain envelope
with love and wonder, thinking about
what words were written by the man she
loves. "thank you!" the french woman exclaimed to his older brother. he walked
down the the stoned pathway, turning back
to bid adieu, gilbert felt sorrowful in what contained inside that letter, but held a
happy face to the overjoyed girl.

for four years, she had hoped
something or maybe even him
would come back, but none of the
less tears poured in joy when she
knew the letter was from him.

opening the grand door that
he once came through the first
time they met, she ran through
the luxurious hallways of the
estate and got to the garden
him and her once were.

laying down on the spring time
grass while the air smelled of the same
lilacs and chrysanthemums that he
knew and saw, she opened the letter
without no hesitation, but her heart
wasn't ready for it was about it read.

TO MY DEAREST LOVE,
[ YOUR NAME ] BONNEFOY,

how are you? i wish to have seen
you to minute i had left marseilles,
but i hope that you're doing well. i've
missed you dearly, and how i yearn
to meet you again, it is simply not
possible under this set of stars.
if you've received this letter by
my older brother gilbert, i have
unfortunately pasted away. but,
even if i am to die and never set
foot on the earth that holds precious
you, i will still keep my promise that
in another lifetime we will met again
and love one another in the ways
couldn't have done in this place and
this time. on the rest of the years
i've lived with after meeting you,
my heart has only beaten for you,
and only you to the last heartbeat.
please do not cry, because one day we'll
finally meet again where i can embrace
you with all the love a man can offer.
i love you, [ your name ] bonnefoy.

LOVE, LUDWIG BEILSCEIDT

taking a deep breath into the
world that no longer held him,
she had tears running down her
red hue cheeks, yet, a smile painted
her lips as she clutched onto the letter.
'he'll keep our promise.' and that
was than enough for her.

her sobs were uncontrollable.
with every teardrop was a piece
of her breaking, however, she
knew in the back of her mind
that one day they'll be reunited.

looking up to the sun setting
sky while colors mixed with all
the shades of blues just like his
eyes, she whispered, hoping he
maybe could hear her to say
the words she never could
say to him alive.

"i love you."

opening her eyes to
see the sun, there she was,
in the garden were it once
was him and her and she
didn't know that moment would
enchant her for a lifetime.

the garden looked same as it was
on that summer day in 1940. her
heart was burning with delight and
a little fear when she realized she was
in the same form, same white dress,
and in same beige hat she wore on
the day it was only ludwig beilschmidt
and [ your name ] bonnefoy.

until the birds flew and the
old willow tree's leaves blew
with the flowers, there he was.

he was smiling, same blonde
hair and blue eyes that she fell in
love with. hearing his voice calling
out to her, [ your name ] didn't
hesitate as he bowed down to lift
her up in his arms.

although they promised to love
one another in a different time and a
different place, faith was kind, and let
them have a moment to themselves where finally, they could be in love at last.

she was in his arms,
where they could finally
dance again; back in
the place where the
lavenders grew.
