CHAPTER TWELVE

YOU WON'T LIKE ME WHEN I'M ANGRY

Meilani huffed as she struggled with the variety of grocery bags in her left hand while she fumbled with her phone in the other. She tried to call Stiles for the past half hour, but he kept declining her call. She understood he was upset with her after what happened to Noah the other night in the school's parking lot. She was upset with herself that she couldn't get to him in time to save him from being hit.

Meilani wanted to see how Noah was doing, but she figured Stiles didn't even want to talk to her about that. Her frustration grew even more as she couldn't remember where she had parked her mom's car. Scott worked right after school until around dinner time, so it was her turn to do the grocery shopping for Melissa while she finished up at work. Meilani didn't really complain since she took whatever opportunity she had to use the car and not her or Scott's bikes.

After another failed attempt at finding the car on the third level, Meilani placed the bags down to grab the key and just click the unlock button until she heard it. She fumbled in her – well Stiles' – sweatshirt pocket and clicked the unlock button. The car beeped a few times on the level above and Meilani did a silent cheer. She could finally go home and relax until Melissa finished dinner.

When Meilani went to grab for the bags, the little bottle of milk rolled out of the bag and under a car a few feet away. Meilani ran after it and dropped to her knees to grab it from under the car. However, once she was on the ground, the bottle magically rolled back out. Meilani raised an eyebrow but scrambled back from the car when she heard a growl. She scrambled to her feet and rushed the other way in case whatever animal was there would pounce out and attack her.

Meilani ran around the corner and quickly ducked behind one of the cars parked three rows down. She knelt on the other side of the car and tried to take deep breaths to regain some air in her lungs. The growl sounded again and Meilani rushed to her feet, running on top of the cars in the next row. Their alarms went off as Meilani ran across them and she ran around the corner to hide behind one of the cars on the other side.

As Meilani leaned against the car, she silently prayed to herself that the animal wouldn't find her hiding behind the car not going off. However, God seemed to not be on her side today as her ringtone began to blast in her pocket. Meilani quickly reached into her pocket to try and silence it, but she was grabbed from behind before she could grab onto it. She was slammed down onto the hood of the car she was hidden behind and groaned as she looked up at the person knelt above her.

Derek Hale.

"And you're dead," Derek stated with a shake of his head.

Meilani glared as he hopped down from the car and began to walk away. She rolled off the car and stormed after him, her blood boiling. "What the hell was that?"

"I said I was going to teach you. I just never said when," Derek replied nonchalantly.

"You scared the crap out of me!" Meilani exclaimed as she slightly jogged to keep up with Derek's long legs.

Derek looked behind him at Meilani and slightly scoffed. "Not yet."

"I was fast, though, right?" Meilani questioned.

"Not fast enough," Derek retorted.

"The car alarm thing was smart, right?" Meilani didn't know why but she wanted to impress Derek, at least a little bit. He was actually being nice and trying to help her, even though he just kept scaring her out of her wits. She wanted to make sure he thought she was improving at the very least.

"Your phone rang."

"Yeah... but I mean... I don't..." Meilani huffed as Derek just continued to walk and not really pay attention to her. "Can you just stop? Please? What happened the other night, Stiles' dad getting hurt, was my fault. I should have been there to help him. I need you to teach me how to control this."

Derek turned to face Meilani and he looked annoyed. Something that Meilani couldn't understand why heΒ was the one getting annoyed. She was the only who had the right to be annoyed out of the two of them. "Look, I am what I am because of birth. You were bitten. Teaching someone who was bitten takes time. I don't even know if I canΒ teach you."

Meilani's heart dropped at the possibility of Derek not being able to teach her how to control her changes. It would not only put her loved ones in danger, but everyone else as well. She could hurt Scott, Stiles, Allison, or her mom without even realizing she's done it. "Then what do I do?"

"You have to get rid of distractions," Derek explained. He grabbed the phone from Meilani's hand and held the screen up to her. On the screen was a missed call from Scott, he was probably wondering where she was. He must have gotten home from work early and didn't see her in the house. There was also a missed text from Stiles, probably about his dad or just him telling her to leave him alone because he was still pissed. "This is why I caught you. You want me to teach you? You have to get rid of Scott, for now."

"I can't just ignore my twin brother, Derek. We live in the same house. Plus, he's going to get really suspicious on why I'm not talking to him."

Derek waved the phone in Meilani's face before he turned and chucked it at the wall. The phone fell to ground in millions of pieces and Meilani stared at them wide-eyed. Derek did notΒ just break her phone. "Getting angry? Good. That's your first lesson. You want to learn how to control this, how to shift, you do it through anger. By tapping into a primal animal rage. You can't do that with Scott around."

Meilani hoped her face showed just how angry she was right now, because she was pretty freaking pissed. He not only broke her phone, but now he was trying to create problems by having her ignore her brother. She could barely do that when they're fighting, little lone when they are perfectly fine. "I can get angry."

"Not angry enough!" Derek snapped. "This is the only way that I can teach you. Now, can you stay away from him? Just until the full moon is over."

Meilani ran a hand through her hair as she thought it over. She knew it was to keep Scott safe and the only reason she didn't have to stay away from Stiles was because she knew Derek secretly thought he was helping her as well. Derek couldn't be there all the time and Stiles seemed to be doing pretty well with helping Meilani through this. Meilani was actually pretty freaking glad Stiles was helping because she didn't know how long she could last with ignoring him.

"If that's what it takes..." Please don't hate me for this Scott.

"Do you want to be alive? Do you want to protect your loved ones? Yes or no?"

"Yes! If you can teach me, I'll stay away from my brother until this is over."

Meilani didn't realize how hard it would actually be to ignore Scott because as soon as she walked into the house with the bags, he approached her. She tried to make it seem like she didn't just freak out in their driveway. Whatever wolf-thing was out there just tried to attack her out in the driveway and then draw some random spiral on her mom's car window. Like that made sense.

"Mei, where have you been? I've called you like four times," Scott stated as he emerged from the living room.

Meilani let out a sigh of relief as she dropped the heavy bags onto the counter. She turned to face Scott with a frown. They were in the house, how was she supposed to ignore him? He did deserve to know why she didn't answer his calls at least. "Sorry, I dropped my phone and it just shattered. I have to ask Mom to get me a new one. Did I worry you?"

"Kind of," Scott replied as he began to help Meilani put all the groceries away. "I almost called Stiles, but I know you guys are in some kind of weird fight, so I didn't."

"Yeah, thanks for that reminder," Meilani sighed. "We'll get over it soon, hopefully."

Scott chuckled and wrapped an arm around his twin. "You will. Stiles loves you too much to ignore you for more than a day."

Meilani smiled gratefully at her brother before she quickly excused herself to her room. Tomorrow she would officially start ignoring him, unless she desperately needed to talk to him. The full moon wasn't too far off, so he wouldn't be ignored for too long anyway.

When she got up to her room, Meilani realized her blinds were open and raised an eyebrow. She could have sworn she had them closed when she left for school. She walked over to the window to close the blinds and peeked outside to see if the animal was still outside. She didn't see it anywhere and pulled back from the window.

"Meilani."

Meilani jumped at the voice and turned to see Derek sitting in her chair. "You need to stop doing that. What if Scott walked in here? He would have killed me."

"Did you talk to it?"

Meilani took a minute to realize Derek meant the wolf. "Oh, yeah, we talked about the weather and economy with each other."

"Did you get anything off him? Like an impression?" Derek prodded, leaning forward in the chair.

"What do you mean? Like an emotion?"

Derek pushed himself up from the chair and stepped closer to Meilani. "Remember that your other senses are heightened. Communication doesn't have to be spoken. So yes, I mean an emotion."

"He... seemed really angry," Meilani replied.

"Was it focused on you?"

Meilani shook her head. "No, but it was there, especially when he drew the spiral."

Derek seemed to freeze at the mention of the wolf drawing on her window. "Wait... the what?"

"He drew a spiral in the condensation on my mom's car window." Meilani raised an eyebrow as she saw Derek seemed to get lost in his train of thought. "What? You're making a face like you know what it means."

"It's nothing," Derek brushed off before making his way over to Meilani's bedroom window.

"Wait!" Meilani called, grabbing onto his wrist. "You can't do that. You can't ask me to trust you... and... then just keep things to yourself."

Derek shook his head and tried to make it seem like the spiral meant nothing. Meilani, however, knew that was a load of bull. He tried to go for the window again, but Meilani stopped him.

"Your sister was buried under a spiral. What does it mean?" Meilani asked again.

Derek chuckled humorlessly. "You don't want to know."Β

Without another word, Derek opened Meilani's window and dropped down to the ground below. Meilani fell back on her bed and covered her face. Everything was just falling apart it seemed.

The next morning, Meilani purposefully woke up earlier than Scott and left the house before him or Melissa were dressed. She made an excuse to Melissa that she was going in early for a study session in the library. She walked through the halls and felt the sudden dread of loneliness. Stiles was usually right by her side talking animatedly about whatever happened the day before, or new discoveries he found for her wolf-ism. She never realized how much she depended on Stiles until they were fighting and not speaking.

In the halls, Meilani quickly avoided both Jackson and Lydia – who shockingly greeted her. Meilani wondered if that triple date changed Lydia's mind or the fact that Meilani was now one of the best on the lacrosse team. She wasn't sure which one it was and didn't know which one she'd rather it be. It could even be because of Allison. Lydia seemed nicer since Allison started being friends with her and Jackson.

When Meilani entered the classroom for her and Stiles' first class, she saw him sat in his usual spot in front of her seat. He looked up and she could tell he was still beyond pissed at her because his expression was hard, barely even glancing at her. Meilani actually wanted to cry just looking at him because she was not used to that face being directed at her. She slowly made her way to her seat behind him and sat down, dropping her bag to the ground next to her desk. She stared at the back of Stiles' head, hoping that he would just randomly turn around and smile at her. Greeting her with his usual "Morning, beautiful."

However, that didn't happen, and it hurt – a lot. "Still not talking to me?'

Stiles continued to just stare ahead and play with his pencil he held in his hand.

Meilani deflated a little. This was the longest they had ever gone with not talking. "Can you at least tell me if your dad is okay? It's just a bruise, right? That's what my mom said after she looked over him at the hospital. Soft tissue damage? Nothing... too... big?"

"You know I feel really bad about it, right?" Meilani continued, because even though it was just her talking... she knew he was at least listening. "Okay, what if I told you that I'm trying to figure this whole thing out, and that I went to Derek for help?"

Stiles let out a breath and lightly slapped his hand against his desk. "If I wasΒ talking to you, I'd say that you're insane for trusting him. But, obviously, I'm not talking to you so..."

The bell for the class to start rang, which ended any conversation they could have. Meilani bit her lip and blinked a few times to keep the tears from forming. At least she got him to say a sentence to her. It was kind of sarcastic and snarky, but still. It was something. She grabbed her notebook from her bag and opened it to where she last had written notes down.

Stiles quickly turned in his seat to face Meilani, slightly scaring her. He looked defeated. "What did he say?"

Meilani grinned at Stiles and took the whole period to explain everything to Stiles that happened after he stopped talking to her.

"Wait," Stiles said as he followed Meilani out of the classroom once the period was done. "He wants you to tap into your animal side and get angry? Okay, correct me if I'm wrong, but every time you do that, you try and kill someone. That someone is usually me, because I'm always there."

"I know, and that's why he doesn't know if he can teach me. I have to be able to control this."

"How is he going to teach you to do that?" Stiles asked.

Meilani shrugged, feeling the frustration come back to her again. "I don't know. I don't think he does either."

"Okay," Stiles groaned, throwing his head back. "When are you seeing him again?"

"He's picking me up at the animal clinic when I get off work. It was one of the only days where Scott wasn't working with me. Why?"

"That gives me until the end of the school day then."

Meilani rose an eyebrow at Stiles. What in the hell was he planning? "Stiles... what are you doing?"

"I'm going to teach you myself."

☾☽☾☽☾

At lunch, Meilani sat with Stiles at the back table of the cafeteria to hide from Scott. She propped up her History textbook and opened her notebook to make it look like she was just doing homework.

"You know the textbook is making it obvious," Stiles commented, writing down ideas in his open notebook. He turned to look behind him at the table Scott and Allison were sat at. They both laughed and flirted with each other, not even looking in the couple's direction. "Besides, he's too busy making kissy faces at Allison to notice you."

Meilani peeked from behind her textbook to see Scott smile lovingly at Allison and kiss her cheek. God, she thought her and Stiles were bad with the PDA. Her brother and Allison were now competition for that. "Did you come up with a plan yet?"

"I think so," Stiles responded, taking a bite out of his green apple.

Meilani looked up at him innocently through her eyelashes. "Does it mean you're not mad at me anymore?"

"No," Stiles shook his head and swallowed the rest of his apple. "But your wolf drama is infiltrating my life, so now I have to help and make sure you're okay."

Meilani smiled innocently at Stiles who merely rolled his eyes. "I love you?"

"Yeah, I know," Stiles knocked the textbook lightly. "Besides, I'm a much better Yoda than Derek."

"Okay, yeah you teach me."

"I'm your Yoda," Stiles clarified as if Meilani didn't get it.

"Yeah, be my Yoda, babe," Meilani couldn't help but chuckle. "Can I be Leia then? Scott can be Luke and it funnily works out because Luke and Leia are twins. Just... minus that whole kiss bit before they knew they were related."

"Your Yoda I will be," Stiles imitated Yoda's voice with a goofy grin on his face. "I said it backwards –"

"I know how he talks, Sti," Meilani interrupted.

Stiles pushed his tongue into his cheek. "Okay, I definitely still hate you. Uh-huh. Oh yeah!" He grabbed Meilani's textbook and rushed away, leaving her in full view of Scott.

Meilani's eyes widened as Scott just so happened to turn to her at that moment. "Stiles!" She yelled and scrambled to run after him. She could tell by the look on Scott's face that he wanted to walk over and ask why he hadn't see her yet that day. Usually she would meet him at his locker and hang out between their classes. However, that obviously didn't happen today. It hurt to ignore him, but until she could control her changes, he needed to be away from her.

Once she noticed Scott tried to follow her, she rushed around a corner and hid in a random classroom. She peeked out the window on the door to see Scott run by in search for her. She sighed as she leaned against the door. "This is notΒ going to be easy."

AUTHORS NOTE

I am SO sorry this hasn't been updated in like a month. If you guys saw my update post in this story, you'll know school has been kicking my ass and that updates will be kind of slow until the first week of June. Today I had a day to myself with my boyfriend working and no homework, so I was actually able to sit down and write this chapter for you guys. I'll try not to take a month to publish the next chapter, promise.

This one took me a bit longer to do, only because I was torn between Meilani having to ignore Stiles or her having to ignore Scott. I was going to do Stiles, but I really want to do the scenes of him doing the heart monitor. Obviously, Scott can't do it because he doesn't know she's a werewolf just yet, so Scott had to be the one she ignores for now. I also thought it would be interesting in her trying to ignore him WHILE LIVING IN THE SAME DAMN HOUSE. This will be fun times.

WE'RE ALMOST DONE WITH THIS BOOK GUYS. LIKE WE'RE HALF WAY DONE WITH THE SEASON AND THIS. IT'S INSANE! It also means we're getting closer to where Allison and Scott will find out Meilani's a werewolf. Not prepared for it, man.

Once this book finishes, I'm going to take like a week or two to just edit it and then I'll begin Book 2. I'll put up book 2 with the cast list and everything, but I won't post the first chapter until a week or 2 after this one finishes. Just to give me time to go back and edit the grammar and stuff.

ANYWAYS! I hope you all enjoyed this chapter. Don't forget to vote and leave me a comment of what you thought!

EDITED ON: SEPTEMBER 18TH, 2019
