Miles and Roy Mustang sat in a sterile hospital room, friends surrounding them and keeping them company. Miles had a lanky arm wrapped around his husband's shoulders, the black-haired man nestled into his side. It seemed smaller than usual, not used to the intense feeling of vulnerability. But no matter what, he would not shy away from the touch of his husband, who held the matching wedding band, no matter how many people had their eyes on them.

Miles was almost certain they both still had blood on them from the final battle on the Promised Day. Father had been ruthless in order to get what he desired the most: Truth. He wanted to itch all of his skin at the thought that Riza Hawkeye's blood was still caked on him, staining his hands, as he held her dying body in his arms.

He still remembered the indescribable emotion that surged through his nerves as he watched his husband disappear before him, and as his best friend began to breathe laboriously with her slit neck. The thought of loosing them both in that moment drove him to the edge, and he recalled with a physical cringe how he had screamed and sobbed over Riza's body, his tears washing the blood off of his ring.

'Not... going... anywhere,' the strained words from the angelic woman's mouth had quickly brought him back, her hand gripping his arm tightly. 'Have to make sure... Roy treats you...good.'

It gave him the strength he needed to get up, to fight, to find his husband. It gave him the strength he needed to not break in front of the man who needed him most, when seeing how lost the man seemed. It gave him the strength he needed to support Roy when seeing his stumbling form, and his clouded eyes.

Yeah, the Promised Day was fucking insane. (By far the most insane part was seeing Alphonse in his actual body. Sure, basically a walking skeleton, but still his body. Now he could actually see the kid he had grown to adore smile.)

But his thoughts fled from him as the sound of a newcomer came through. Roy perked up, but had come to learn that he shouldn't waste his energy turning to look. Miles did that for him, adjusting his glasses as he glanced to the door with curiosity.

"Sorry for interrupting," the social worker apologized, noticing how quickly everyone in the room had fallen silent. "I just had some news about Kishore."

Roy's back straightened at her words, and everyone else stared at her intently. Miles didn't notice the way he was turning his ring in nervousness.

"It's been confirmed that his parents survived the Ishvalan Civil War. They broke off from the rest of the refugees though, and joined a small group that decided to flee to Xing. They didn't make it far into the desert before dying of dehydration and malnutrition. It's a miracle that Kishore survived, being only a year old and all. If that shepherd hadn't found him..." She stopped glancing away sadly. She had seen many cases like this, as it was her job, but they all had some different personal effect. "Anyways, he's looking for someone to adopt him, if you two are still interested."

Roy smiled. He had surprisingly been the one to find out about the Ishvalan orphan, convincing Miles that this boy was meant to be their son. Miles had made sure Roy knew how insensitive to his birth parents that was, but after setting his eyes on the child couldn't help but feel a sudden longing to hold him.

It was a big step, and a quick one at that. But as Roy Mustang himself had said, "I'd be blind for several lifetimes if it meant raising this boy with you."

"Kishore Mustang..." Miles hummed. Their friend looked at the two of them. They all already knew the answer. The social worker was the only one waiting. "Almost sounds as good as Miles Mustang."

And Roy laughed.
