Mio and Michi never liked Megumi Fushiguro. His presence was just a reminder of what the Sasaki Clan was meant to be before it met its demise. To Mio, Megumi was the reincarnation of all her dead family haunting her; they mocked her for being absent during their genocide. To Michi, Megumi's eyes swam with a constant grief that mirrored the one she had first discovered that frightful night.

To the mothers, Megumi was a snare and their beloved son was a rabbit that simply wanted to escape. The rabbit could not flee what he does not realize is bad for him.

Mio and Michi were not foolish. They knew it was not just for them to project their bitterness of failed past lives unto an innocent child. No matter how much the two despised Megumi Fushiguro, they continued to welcome him into their home every time he requested entrance.

Megumi was not foolish. He knew the recognizable glint in their eyes as they smiled down at him. He used to be grateful for pity but that was long before he had discovered the world. He left them alone with a short bow before he headed towards the (metaphorical) forest where his rabbit awaited.

"Hey, Megu," Kazuya Sasaki greeted his friend fondly. Megumi was grateful to find that he had seemingly forgotten about their argument from the previous day. If he hadn't forgotten naturally, then Kazuya had probably forced it to the backgrounds of his mind.

"Hi, Kazu," Megumi returned. The two didn't say anymore as they settled onto Kazuya's bed, the blonde allowing the other boy to read along to his manga over his shoulder. Their proximity wasn't uncomfortable (in fact, probably the opposite, not that they would ever admit that to one another).

Megumi didn't ruin many things in his life, but as thoughts began to swarm through his mind about the future he noticed his breathing become faltered and he felt his cheeks become hot. If Kazuya's past (a dark past that Fushiguro almost wished he had never been told about) had taught the raven haired teen anything it was that Regret was just another name for the future.

Kazuya unknowingly leaned further into Megumi's side as the latter shifted in anticipation.

"Uh, Kazuya, look—"

Megumi hadn't meant to sound so... nervous? Unsure? Whatever it was Sasaki immediately took notice and tensed as if hyperaware of the way his friend's bicep twitched or the way he swallowed more than necessary. And like two sides of a coin, they had different ideas running racing through their naive minds.

"Drop it, Fushiguro," Kazuya snapped with finality. Perhaps he hadn't meant to sound so harsh but this was becoming a sore subject. He was not attending Jujutsu Tech— not even if it would bring his relatives back from the dead.

What Megumi felt in that moment wasn't necessarily heartbreak, more like... more like disappointment. He hadn't even had a chance to voice his feelings and Kazuya was already rejecting the notion (even if his thoughts about the subject were jumbled and his words would have came out the same, still...).

And of course he rubbed it in by once again snuggling against his side, dark eyes settling back unto the crinkled manga pages. Eyes that left the pages unread.

Two sides of a coin, prey and predator. Never meant to be one and that is why they left each other that night thinking they had agreed upon the same things.

(( a/n ))
i changed kazuyas one mom name to michi bc i like. forgot theres a whole jjk character named maki already💀

also have decided that most of the chapters will be about this length bc i cant be bothered to force a higher word count for such a shallow and simple plot😓 i dont think its anything wrong with my writing but simply fits this style better
