chapter eleven . audition results

Jonna paced her room, squeezing her hands together. She physically couldn't stop moving, her nerves doing the work for her while she couldn't get the upcoming cast list out of her mind. It was supposed to come out at any time.

Darnell was trying to distract her from his spot on her bed. He clutched onto her laptop eagerly, just as nervous for his best friend. He masked it well, and his constand jokes to Jonna helped ease her up a bit.

She didn't want the entire group in her room when the cast list was released, and even considered kicking Darnell out, but he stayed put and refused to leave her side.

"Jon, it's here." He told the girl, who immediately rushed to his side, sitting down on the spot next to him.

Jonna was quick to take the laptop out of his hands and open the email. She scrolled and scrolled and scrolled until her face fell. She closed the laptop and handed it back to Darnell, shaking her head to tell him that she didn't get cast at all, not even as an ensemble.

Darnell set the laptop down on the other side of him and wrapped her in a hug. "I'm sure you'll get casted in something else." He told her.

"I should've been casted in this." Jonna replied, "I was so prepared and everything, it was my best audition yet." She pulled away and looked down at her hands, on the verge of tears. "I'm just not good enough." A tear slid down her cheek while she said those words, and many more followed after it.

Darnell set his hands on her shoulders, shaking her gently so that she would look up at him. "Hey, hey. Don't say that, okay? You're really talented, like really really talented. If they can't see that then it's their loss."

Jonna gave him a small smile and leaned forward to give him another hug. "God, what would I do without you?" She laughed, wiping her tears with the back of her hand.

"You'd be dead." He joked, just to hear her laugh again. "I'm sure you're gonna wanna hang with the girls so I won't waste your time anymore." Darnell pulled away from her and stood up, "Just let me know if you need anything, okay?"

"Okay." She smiled, shooting him a thumbs up despite the fact that she was still crying.

"I'm here for you." He told her, playfully pushing her before he left the room. Darnell waved at Elizabeth and Lucielle. "She's all yours."

The two girls nodded and rushed past Darnell, immediately holding up their bags of ice-cream once they reached her room.

"We brought the goods." Elizabeth stated proudly, sitting down on the floor in front of Jonna's bed. She handed a container of ice-cream to Jonna and pulled out her own.

"I got the spoons." Lucielle added, handing each of the girls a spoon. She sat next to Jonna on the bed and gave the crying latina a hug. "Aw, just let it all out."

Jonna cried silently into Lucielle's shoulder while Elizabeth dug into her ice-cream. She leaned up against Jonna's bed and sighed.

Once Jonna finished crying she pulled away and eagerly popped off the lid of her ice-cream. "So, Elizabeth, what's up with you?" She asked, desperate to talk about anything else but her audition.

"Adonis and Maisie. You know, a girl can't get over a crush in peace these days. I'm chilling out on the couch and then suddenly they're snuggling next to me! It's ridiculous." Elizabeth grumbled, stabbing her spoon into the ice-cream.

"I'm sure you'll get over him quickly. These things take time." Lucielle smiled cheerfully, sliding off the bed to wrap her arm around Elizabeth's shoulders. Elizabeth leaned into her and shook her head.

"I'm trying to change, you know? But it's either they can't read the fucking room or Adonis told Maisie that I asked him out."

"What would Adonis telling Maisie have anything to do with this?" Jonna piped in, sliding down to sit next to Lucielle.

"Because this could be Maisie rubbing it in that she got Adonis! I don't know!"

"Maisie's not like that-"

"We don't know what she's like when it comes to her boyfriend. When was the last time you saw her dating someone? Exactly. She's been single since like -" Elizabeth paused, trying to remember the boy's name. "Luke?"

"Lucas?"

"Lathan?"

"Linkin?"

"No, no. It was definitely Lathan."

"Who cares what his name was!" Elizabeth groaned. "She hasn't dated anyone for awhile. She's probably one of those super defensive chicks that control the fuck out of their men."

Jonna opened her mouth to argue, but then closed it. "Anyways, what are you gonna do about it?"

"I'm gonna... I'm gonna dye my hair!" Elizabeth smiled, standing up. "Yeah! That!"

Lucielle's jaw dropped as she watched the princess look in the mirror.

"No fucking way." Jonna laughed, her voice slightly softer than usual due to how much she had been crying.

"Yeah! I have this box bleach kit I've been dying to use in my room. Cmon!" Elizabeth grabbed Jonna's hand, excitedly dragging the girl to her room. Lucielle followed after them.

The blonde watched as the princess dug out her box bleach kit from her drawers, holding it up proudly above her head. "Is this a good idea-" Lucielle began.

"Of course it is. What's the worst that could happen?"

β€” β€” β€”

"Shit! Shit! It burns!" Elizabeth yelped, running around her room like a psychopath. "Take it off! Take it off!"

"It smells disgusting." Jonna groaned, opening her window. She stuck her head out and breathed in the non bleach air.

"What's going- oh shit." Darnell gasped, standing at the door of the room. The three girls whipped around like a bunch of deer caught in headlights.

The princess was frantic to come up with an excuse. "Um! Don't worry about it." She rambled.

"Is it supposed to smell this bad?" Darnell pressed on, biting back one of his jokes. "I think it's been in too long."

"And what do you know about hair?" Elizabeth snapped back, grabbing the box from the dresser. "And I've got a few more minutes."

"You're a fucking princess! Couldn't you afford to just go get it done?" He laughed, leaning against the doorframe. He held a bag behind his back but never pulled it out.

Lucielle tried to peek at him but he moved slightly so he could block her view of the bag. She shrugged and turned her focus back to Elizabeth.

The timer finally went off and Elizabeth sprinted over to the bathroom, shoving her head into the shower. Jonna followed after her.

Lucielle closed the door on Darnell's face, yelling something about "girls only" and "gossiping". The boy reluctantly sighed and walked back over to his room while Jonna was aggressively trying to scrub the bleach from Lizzie's hair.

It didn't help that Elizabeth was screaming the whole time, yelling at Jonna to get it off faster. The whole ordeal was full of yelling and screaming until they were finally finished.

β€” β€” β€”

Elizabeth stood in front of the mirror in her room, the bleached hair putting her in a state of shock. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't necessarily good either. "I'm definitely gonna need someone to fix this."

"I know a girl." Lucielle smiled. "She does my hair." The blonde pulled out her phone to shoot her hairstylist a text while Elizabeth continued to mess with her hair. "She can get you in right now, wanna go?"

"Yes! Please!" Elizabeth threw on her hoodie and grabbed her car keys. "Jon, you coming?"

"I think I'm gonna stay and hang out with Darnell." The brunette smiled, giving the girls a small wave goodbye. "Cya!"

β€” β€” β€”

Darnell was awoken from his nap when a few soft knocks were hit against his door. Jonna stepped inside before he could even reply, feeling more impatient than ever.

She ran over and jumped onto him, ignoring the grunt of pain he made at the sudden weight on his back. "Glad to know you're doing better." He joked, shrugging her off of him.

Jonna rolled off of his back so that she was laying facedown on her bed. "Honestly? Not really." She responded, somewhat muffled by the pillow.

"And why's that?" Darnell sat up, looking down at her.

She rolled over that she was on her back. "Well, I don't know. I'm still a bit sad about it."

"And that's totally okay." Her best friend stood up and grabbed the bag from the floor, "Here, I got this for you."

"Really?" Jonna eagerly sat up and took the bag, opening it to see a Hamilton hoodie staring up at her. She immediately smiled and jumped up to wrap him in a hug. "Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!"

Darnell laughed and wrapped his arms around his waist, holding her close. "No problem. I saw it and just had to get it for you."

"You're literally the best." She pulled away so that she could pull the hoodie on. "Let's go somewhere! I wanna show this off."

"Okay! Be ready in ten?"

"Let's make it five."
