Well, hello my fellow munchkins >:3c

Uh, you don't actually have to read this if you don't want to, it's not super important.

But if you want to hear me rant about adoptables, now's your chance. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Adoptables: A Rant

By North

Little effort * Unpleasant Designs * F2U picture underneath as a design * Repetition * High prices * OTA's every single time * Personal attachment contributes to the price * "Best Offer Wins" every single time * OTA FOR PICREWS AND MYTHAURA?? *

~Hope I'm not being hypocritical 0-0~

Little Effort-

I've. Seen. This. Too. Many. Times. People these days just don't put effort into the designs they're making. I mean, I get trying to make them fast to supply the demand, but there is a fine line between going quickly and cutting corners. I try to keep up with the demand that my book gets, but I don't ever let that get in the way of the quality of my work. Sometimes it's just batches that turn out wonky (which is perfectly fine once in a while!), but sometimes the whole book is like that.

Unpleasant Designs-

I don't want to demean anyone who is genuinely new to the world of design and trying their best, but some of the adoptables out there are just... ew? I mean, at least try, ya know? The thing you're selling could be someone's new main OC. If a new, inexperienced person is experimenting with designs, they are excluded from this part of the rant, since they are actually trying to improve. But some well-established adopt dealers just don't know much about color coordination or something. It's either bland designs or over-complicated ones.

F2U Picture Underneath the Lines as a "Design"

I want to clarify! By this, I mean a picture as the whole design. No other color or anything. Pictures pasted on a small part of the design (such as the wings on dragons) actually look quite nice. I know I myself have gotten one of these recently. But when it is the makeup of the entire design, that's a big mistake. For example, say you wanted to make a sunset cat adopt. You could:

a) get some purple, red, orange, and yellow colors and create a design with a lot of soft markings and ombre. It may take a little while.

or b) search "sunset", use the first image you see, and copy paste it under the base. Takes two minutes.

Which one seems better? Which would people buy?

Repetition-

This one isn't as big of a problem, but it does deserve to be on this list. I see some adopts books using the same colors or markings or bases over and over again. This reduces the amount of original designs sold, so someone may have an eerily similar OC from the same place, which I am sure would cause a big problem these days. It also means that people get bored of your book, since you're essentially repeating the same thing.

Now we're moving on to the selling and pricing aspects.

High Prices-

Ahh... where to start? This is my main complaint with adoptables, and I am sure at least a few people agree with me. Many adopts book I visit have SUPER high OTA prices. Obviously, I don't complain since it's not my right and many people are willing to pay that price. But I believe everyone should just tone it down a bit, you know? Adoptables have become more for the OTAs and less for the designs. If you are making adoptables, make them because you like design and character creation, not just because you want art of your OCs. Don't make small things expensive.

OTAs every single time

This is similar to the last complaint where people just want art of their OCs (which is understandable!). I think the adoptables Wattpaders shouldn't make every page an OTA. It gets extremely boring, and people will be put off. Mix some NTA's and NGPTA's in there. Or, at least a BTA.

Personal attachment contributes to the price-

This is one I struggled with early in the begging and now has become a pet peeve. The adopts that the person likes more than others go for astronomical prices. If you like it enough to charge 3 extra fullbodies, then just keep it! And don't make a whole batch OTA just because you like them all >:(

"Best Offer Wins" all the time

This is a cash grab, but without the cash. An art grab. Best Offer Wins is fine once in a while, but don't do it too often. Especially not OTA's. Keep the BOW's to NTA and BTA's.

OTA's for Picrews and Mythaura Adopts -

Don't. Just DO NOT ever do this. Something you mixed up in a maker app does not ever deserve to go for actual art. Keep it to NTA and at the most, BTA.

And here are some MORE annoying things wonderfully stated by @woofiesss !

"I do want to add one more thing that makes me mad: not using a design or jus turning around and selling it or putting it up for more. I understand that you may feel less connected to a design, but selling it for more or even just holding onto it and never using it, and even not remembering you own the character?

"I also hate it when people will MASS adopt. Like every batch they want to take 2-3 characters. Like, dude, you definitely will forget you have these designs and may not use them :|"

Thanks woofiesss for the addition!

Yay, end of rant!

I realized all this complaining has made me seem like I'm opposed to OTAs. I am not, and believe it is a great way to price adopts when done CORRECTLY.

Also, raffles. Raffles are great when used sparingly :3
