Personal Pronouns

Words that can take the place of nouns and do the same thing as nouns are called pronouns.  Pronouns are marked according to the part they play in a sentence.  Otherwise they are left unmarked.

1.A pronoun is the part of speech that can be used in place of a noun.

 Example with she:

Tina is sleeping now.  She was up late last night.  (She replaces Tina)

2.              Pronouns that refer mainly to persons are personal pronouns.  They are said to have person: first person, second person, and third person.

First person is the person speaking: I will join.

Second person is the person spoken to: You will join.

Third person is the person spoken about: He will join.

3.Personal pronouns formed by adding self or selves to other pronouns are called compound personal pronouns: myself, herself, yourselves

4.Pronouns can be singular or plural, giving them number, one or more.

me     he     we    I  they

5.Pronouns are classified as singular or plural according to their number.

Singular:

First Person Singular:  I, me, my, mine, myself

Second Person Singular:you, your, yours, yourself

Third Person Singular:he, him, his, she, her, hers, it, its, itself

Plural:

First Person Plural:  we, us, our, ours, ourselves

Second Person Plural:you, your, yours, yourselves

Third Person Plural:they, them, their, theirs, themselves

Instructions: Mark the subjects, verbs, objects, and predicate nouns in the following sentences.

1.The manager himself will visit the plant.  We plan to give him a tour of the new facility.

2.{Also}, the vice president will come.  She will be studying problems [with personnel placement].

3.These flowers were growing along the riverbank.  We found them just before we headed back home.

4.She asked, “Why didn’t you buy the dress for yourself?”

5.Is this pen yours or mine?  Jacquie and Jean have theirs.

6.I went with dad.  Did Sue and Pat take the bus?

7.My dog has caught himself {in the fence}.

8.It looks {like his}, but it is {probably} yours.

9.They walked {to school} {with us} but took the bus home.

10.He and I enjoyed the movie.  It was very exciting.
