When Jacy King was a little girl, she watched from inside of a closet as her father killed her step-mother. He was a man with a temper, and she was a woman who wouldn't back down. Jacy was the one to call the police to her house since the neighbours had long since stopped calling about the screams that came out of the King household. When the police arrived, Jared King was arrested, Noelle King was brought to the morgue, and Jacy was put into child protective services.

Never one to back down herself, Jacy agreed to testify at her father's trial. He had done a terrible thing, Jacy had seen him do it, and she couldn't let him get away with it, whether he was her father or not. When Jared King was declared guilty of first-degree murder, Jacy was officially put into the foster care system.

That didn't last long, though, and after only a few months, the young girl packed up all her belongings and ran away. As soon as she set foot onto the road, a path appeared in her mind's eye that she followed to its end.

Its end, it turned out, was not a place but a person. As Jacy found herself before a mysterious woman with stormy eyes and long, dark hair. This woman turned out to be not only Jacy's mother, but the goddess Athena as well. The goddess of wisdom gifted Jacy with a journal, a dagger and a map.

The map would lead her to a place where she would find her own kind, other children of gods, demigods. It was run by a woman named Annie Grace, who welcomed Jacy without question into her home.

The dagger was special, magic, Athena explained, and would always be there when Jacy was in danger, and if she ever lost it, it would reappear on her person.

The journal was magic too. It would record any information that Jacy would one day need inside of it. It would also be the vessel through which Athena would be able to communicate with Jacy if she ever needed to.

Years after finding her mother and people like her, Jacy is approached by a man that has heard she's very good at finding people. He doesn't tell her why the man he's looking for supposedly died seventy years ago or why his blonde friend looks suspiciously like Captain America.
