Sentimental Value

Maxine lowered the gun from Enos' head, who nodded gently to his superior officer and best friend. Boss looked a bit surprised, but not ungrateful, gripping the bars. Bo and Luke each nodded gently to Rosco. Mark, Jason, and Maxine each followed Rebson to where Flash was. He unclipped her chain from the wall and took her up in his arms. Rosco whimpered as the four left silently with Flash, closing the door behind them. He scrambled over to the Duke's cage to unlock it with the keys hanging nearby. After letting them out, they ran outside, grabbing the General Lee and speeding away after the four, who had stolen a dark green sedan from the nearby hotel. They intended to get Flash back, no matter what. Although Rosco hadn't done much for them in the past, he did just save their lives, and they knew they had to repay that by saving Flash.

Rosco unlocked Boss' cell next, slow and regretful. Boss laughed a hearty laugh of relief and threw his arms around Rosco, despite being shorter than him. "Oh, Rosco! I know I've done so many terrible things to you, but thank you for not letting them kill me!"

Rosco gently hugged Boss as well, replying with a depressed voice. "No problem, Little Fat Buddy..." Then, he moved over to untie Enos, Boss walking over to where Flash was earlier.

"Rosco, they left this stuffed toy in Flash's place." Boss picked it up, examining it, then finding the rip in the top. He opened it up to find the money. "Oh, Rosco, look! We're rich! They left us money so you could go buy another mutt!" Boss laughed heartily and kissed the stacks of bills.

That's when Enos spoke up. "Um, Mr. Hogg, I don't think the sheriff wants another dog. I think Flash holds sentimental value, you know?"

Boss turned around with furrowed eyebrows. "No, I don't know." He said.

Rosco shook his head. "It ain't my money anyways, Boss. It's from the bank. They replaced the bills in your bank with counterfeit ones. I guess they used it as a cover up for their real plot." Rosco said, using the same dull tone as before. He dragged himself over to Boss Hogg, removing all the money from the stuffed dog, then holding the animal gently in his arms, as if it were Flash. He dragged himself upstairs, grabbing a nearby box and starting to pack up the items on his desk, one by one. Rosco still held the stuffed Flash in one arm while he packed with the other. Boss and Enos came upstairs as well, Boss stuffing all the money into his pockets for later. Enos watched Rosco pack with a small frown, having never seen him this gloomy before. Rosco mumbled as he packed. "Police work is my life... Hot pursuit... Flash beside me... We almost caught those Duke boys... if it hadn't been for that dumb patrol car... I would've caught them... and Flash would be alright..." Tears welled up in Rosco's eyes, a few slipping down his cheeks.

Boss finally decided enough was enough, moving quickly into his office and back out of it, setting Rosco's badge and his belt on the desk. "Rosco P. Coltrane, I hereby reinstate you as Sheriff of Hazzard County."

Rosco looked up at Boss, surprised. "But Boss, I thought— "

Rosco was cut off by Boss. "I know what I said. He made me say it, saying it was all part of his plan."

Rosco, still not the brightest, looked at Boss confusedly. "Who?"

"Rebson, you numbskull!" Boss sighed and put his hands to his head. "Oh, you're going to give me a headache. Just unpack your stuff, will ya?"

"Alright." Rosco said, simply reversing his actions. He seemed a bit happier, but not by much. Flash was still out there, and Rosco didn't know how everything would turn out in the end. He was afraid he'd lost his best friend, forever.

After he finished unpacking, Rosco sat down at his desk, holding the ripped stuffed dog to his chest tightly. Boss had gone back into his office to straighten everything out, while Enos had stayed at a desk nearby to watch over Rosco.

It isn't as warm as Flash was... he thought. That's when Jesse, Cooter, and Daisy burst in, each looking around. Rosco, unfazed by the sudden commotion, leaned back in his chair, his eyes still damp with tears. "Oh, Rosco..." Daisy said sadly. Enos walked over to Cooter and Jesse, explaining what had happened. Daisy tried comforting Rosco in any way she could, although Rosco couldn't be helped. All that could bring him back was Flash. Jesse and Cooter set off to go help Bo and Luke.
