WEEK 122

Prompt:

As I lie in bed, staring at the ceiling, it starts again—the slow creak of a rocking chair on the worn floorboards of the attic. The completely empty attic.

I'm somewhat familiar with the sound at this point, but... it sounds slightly different. Instead of hearing the creaks from directly above me, I hear them slowly descend down the stairs. So, I shout, "Mom, I'm in my bedroom!"

An eerie whisper echoes in the room. I realize the reason why the attic is empty is because my dead mother left me this empty house in her will six months ago. I've listed it for sale—no wonder she got upset and paid me a visit. Scared, I whisper, "Um, hey, mom, how are you?"

A book is thrown across the room from the shadows and it smacks me in the face. "I'm fine!" yells my mom.

I flip through the pages of the book and see it's filled with cash. But the second I pick up a note, it disintegrates in my hands. Instead of cash, there's fairy dust on my hands.

Suddenly, a bird crashes into the window. I run outside to tend to the bird. The bird suddenly becomes a pterodactyl. I run away, screaming, only to run into a tree. I fall down to the ground. Then I wake up on my bed, to the sound of the rocking chair from the room upstairs.

So I say "Screw this," and immediately grab my double-barrel shotgun to confront the poltergeist in my attic. Yet, as I enter the attic, there's no one there except for a small girl cloaked in white.

"Time to die... again," I say maliciously as I prepare to completely annihilate the ghost girl with my holy shotgun. I realize as I attempt to shoot the girl that my gun has jammed, and now I'm just standing there staring blankly at the girl.

"Here, try this one," she says as she handed me another gun.

"Oh, thank you," I say happily before shooting her in the head.

"You missed," she says, snickering, considering she's a ghost without any corporeal form. I groan as the room fills with ghosts. They crowd around me, and, petrified by their absolute spookiness, I faint in the most dramatic way possible.
