Dear Eliza,

I apologize for the text incident. For someone who has quite a way with words, I have no control over their escape and the quantity that they come out in.

In other words... I don't know when to shut up.

I imagine that I was simply desperate; I'm rather lonely.

You are an amazing, wonderful friend, and I can't stand to lose you.

Best wishes,
                      Alexander

I had meant it.

I had meant each word and each individual letter.

But it was desperation for someone to talk to. Loneliness was taking its toll, and rather negatively. I was growing impulsive.

I went to mail the letter and when I came inside, I figured I should take my mind off of things. I decided to text Laf and see what distractions he could offer.

Hey, would you like to meet up somewhere tonight? We haven't talked in a while, I would love to catch up.

I'm down. Faucette? 7:30?

See you then. Thank you, Laf.

We spent three hours talking.

There wasn't really much to catch up on- but we spoke for hours on end.

Along with plenty of drinking.

I aimed to stay away from the topic of Eliza, which worked for maybe an hour or so...

But Laf was aware of the pen pal program, and couldn't resist mentioning her.

"So, tell me about you and Eliza," he smirked, his accent thick as he spoke.

A fiery red heat creeped up my neck and spread into my cheeks. "Eliza...?" I repeated in a tone that combined surprise and melancholy.

A strange expression flooded his face. "Did she break up with you or something? You never told me you were dating!" Laf exclaimed.

"We never were," I said brashly. "And we probably never will. I sort of screwed everything up because of my inability to know when to stop talking."

He raised an eyebrow.

With a defeated sigh, I pulled out my phone and handed it to him. I bit the inside of my cheek as he read the messages intently.

"Mom Dieu, Alexander," he commented, biting back a laugh.

"It's not a laughing matter," I retorted.

Laf shrugged. "I take pleasure in your embarrassment."

I rolled my eyes. "Yeah, yeah. But what am I going to do about this?" I pointed to my phone dramatically.

"You can write like no one's business. I say, write her some over the top love note that will make her come running back to you."

I blinked in confusion. "That's hilarious."

He shrugged. "Well. You could apply to college in New York City. I've heard that there are some pretty good universities up there, and you're quite a genius."

"That's it!" I beamed. "It basically combines my two favorite things, writing and-"

I paused abruptly as I realized what I was saying.

"Eliza."
