If writing is what you love to do and not just who you are,
Failure is never an option, nor is giving up.

Yes, you'll have to work hard at it, revising over and
Over till the writing is just perfect, burning the midnight candles
Under the eaves of your writing corner deep into the night,

Wondering when or if your diligence will pay off,
Receiving little (if any) feedback or encouragement in return.
It's enough to try the will of any prospective writer still
Teetering on the brink of writer's block and creative oblivion,
Ending your hopes for recognition with the last paragraph for the day.

Indeed, the art of writing is the art of perseverance,
Testing the patience of a saint with doubt and jealousy.

These are the trials that try a writer's will to its limits;
He or she who writes in the shadow of obscurity,
Even those with great potential, waver under the influence of fame,
Yielding to popularity instead of holding fast to originality.

We are writers, you and I, the honest and noble kind.
If you ever feel like giving up or giving in, remember this:
Let others write through the eyes of fame using someone else's pen, and
Leave the trendy, tried and true for those who can't write for themselves.

Come into your own creativity by writing what you want
Over the writings of the trendy and the popular. But
More than anything else, keep trying—keep writing—, and some day
Everyone will enjoy reading the fruits of your labor.

A/N: Here's one you don't see every day. Belelive it or not, I wrote this for bandgeek13 who was feeling very discouraged about continuing to write a few weeks ago. She got upset over the crappiness of some of the stories on the What's Hot List. It just goes to show you that popularity on this site doesn't necessarily translate into great writing. When I posted an essay about the subject, Essay on Writing & Writers, she came up with an amazing line in a comment. It was a spark of genius, let me tell you! It's so good that I added that quote to my essay, as well as added it here in Acrostic Quotes. Sometimes the best lines come from the most unexpected sources. ( ^_^ )
