Welcome bub, it's full review time. I hope it assists. Don't hesitate to contact me with any queries...

One of the princes of South Korea, Prince Kim Taehyung stopped believing in happy endings. However, his views changed when he met Yeona, a girl who strongly believes in happy endings

I adore when books incorporate fantasy elements or fairytale premises. I really do. And it always seemed like a lot of the places I ventured on Wattpad - whether it be awards or reviews shops etc - that Modern Fairytale was also there.

In passing I always thought "Hmm I gotta check that out one day" so when you requested for a review I was pretty chuffed about it

Anyways, I've gone off topic. Let's begin!

Your cover is pretty. I think it would be better suited to the mood of your book if the colour scheme was more vibrant, so that the font and pictures are more striking (at the moment all the hues are very dim and muted - almost ghostly!) but in the grand scheme of things, what it forgoes in distinctness it makes up for in significance

Taehyung is a prince and that's what we see, his posture is formal, he's standing amidst a grand palace and the theme absolutely complements the name and storyline, so what's there to complain about, really?

People go on and on about drawing readers in with WOW covers and such, which is important if that's your ultimate aim, but to me, it makes more sense - and illustrates more effort - when an author makes sure all their book elements are in sync

The description was no different. It's understated but effective and tells us what the story is about without giving anything away, setting the tone of readers should expect from the two main characters. It didn't make me want to dive in, but it got me intrigued

As it begins, the prologue adds to this by hinting a more about what to expect. The idea of being in a fairytale where happy endings don't exist. A modern one unlike the classics just like the title says.

It's an ode to your attention to small detail

Another, was when we met the main OC, Jung Yeona, which means 'Golden Princess'

I see you bb!

It's promptly explained that Yeona is a girl that has been through hardship but this hasn't dampened her outlook on life nor her hard working sensibilities. We learn of the existence of the Prince, and then thereafter commences a series of fateful misunderstandings and meet cutes

It's not insta-love. It's a scene by scene progression from strangers to allies which is good, but truthfully, if there was a scale that measured cliché from 1 to 10 then the plot of Modern Fairytale would be a solid 9. Right up there with the script of a corny K-drama or that Netflix movie, A Christmas Prince

You know the one. But if you don't then give it a watch. You'll see what I mean

The only reason I wouldn't give it an outright 10 is because although it had its cliche moments, it wasn't so cliche that it was lame, courtesy of a few humanising moments and the mystery surrounding Yeona's oldest sister

The direction you're heading with that arc seems predictable BUT actually, overall, I didn't mind the cliches because I found your book quite charming!

The writing style and dialogue wasn't what one would call a novelistic masterpiece. Dialogue is short. Snappy. Straight to point but luckily there is just enough character background covered to clue readers into the main characters inner workings and keep them interesting

Yeona is a classic underdog with a positive attitude and a heart of gold

She's confident but not arrogant, slightly anti-social and prefers watching things free at home than going out and paying (me, seriously, me), goes out of her way to do things for others, is wronged by Taehyung but still empathizes with him, doesn't care about his royal status even berating him for his ill manners and is a good Unni to her younger sister

Then there's Taehyung. He's assertive and arrogant but this reads as comedic rather than malicious, and later we discover that he too is just a big teddy bear wrapped in marshmallows

Neither Yeona or Tae would get any awards for being highly complex but if your goal was as I suspected - to write them as lighthearted - then there's nothing wrong with having them both be likeable. However, if your intention was to write them as more multi-faceted then I'd suggest putting more focus on individual character building

The duos chemistry was cute though. Every time they met it felt a bit like serendipity and their interactions made me smile. The forced thank you. The forced hug

Cute. Cute. Cute

And don't even get me started on little Minhyun 😍

Your book only has 10 chapters currently and they're not long so it made sense why you grouped these events together early. I love a slow build plot personally but with your writing style that would have been hard to reconcile and it is paced well considering the shorter lengths. Descriptiveness and imagery wasn't really a thing but your story was easy to follow and your vocabulary - while not expansive - was effective and clear

Although, I will say, that describing someone's bangs like Yoo Rachels in the Heirs won't mean much to most readers

If you include that level of detail, try to back it up with further explanation for those that may not be in the know

There were a couple small plot holes, such as why and how Taehyung kept appearing and disappearing out of public places, the whereabouts of Yeona's father, the realism of Yeona going from maid to secretary to the Prince and in one instance Yeona's sister calling her Y/N...

I was all like "Why hello me, what am I doing in there?"

For grammar, there were infrequent incidents

Missing commas at the end of dialogue when speech had not yet ended, the odd misplaced or missing punctuation and incorrect word usage. For example, calling the royals 'royalties' and use of singular vs plurals and tenses ('I normally watch kdramas on my free time' - not times or 'All I did was give it back to him' - not giving etc)

But nothing extreme

In my opinion your book is deserving of a lot more views and votes than it has. It could do with a quick bout of editing, and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone hunting for works that are deep, gritty or unique, but it'd be a perfect read for someone just wanting to enjoy something quick, laid back and fun. And let's face it, there are PLENTY of people who love those things (anyone who says they hate cliches be lying their butt cheeks off too)

I can see you haven't updated it in a while so I do hope you continue it in future, because it's good for what it is and trust me, there are readers out there that would lap it up... if only they knew of its existence

*SIGH* Oh Wattpad news feed, how we unknown authors miss thee!

Linney xo
