Mater's name was inspired by a real NASCAR fan. An animator and writer for the movie met Douglas "Mater" Keever on one of his research trips to the Charlotte Motor Speedway. When Keever met the writer, he introduced himself the same way Mater does in the film: "My name's Ta-Mater, but without the Ta".
