Hello, fellow disciples! We've been searching far and wide for individuals who have cultivated for a long time. This month, we bring to you an interview with RipperGirl88, the author of Where the Sakura Blooms Forever.

Tell us a bit about yourself!

I'm a witch, a dog mom (and a regular mom), and a writer. I love baking, reading, and watching true crime!

What is your writing process? Do you outline everything or write as things come to mind? Why?

I almost never plan my writing. Sometimes, I don't even know where a story is really going until halfway through. I think it's better to let my characters take control of the story. I have a general idea of what I want an end result to be, but how they reach that goal lies with them. I think the story feels more credible that way because the characters always act in a way that is in line with their personality and beliefs. Nothing feels forced.

What are some things that influenced your story?

I've always had a bit of a dark streak. Horror movies, true crime documentaries, crime dramas. I like it when things are, dark, intricate, unexpected, and mysterious. That said, I also have a soft spot for romance and often incorporate elements of this in all my writing, if not making it the main genre itself. I think, there's nothing worse than reading the exact same story copy and pasted again and again, so I always want to make sure there is something "different" in mine. I write the story I want to read myself.

Tell us about the main character of one of your stories. What inspired their creation?

My character Sakura was inspired by her name. It's a beautiful flower that blooms for a short time. So, I thought about a girl with that name who was also fated to "bloom" for a short time. A beautiful tragedy which also helps lend itself to both the mystery and explanation of the magical realm she finds herself in. Also, a bit of foreshadowing for the reader.

What were some challenges you experienced while writing the story?

Like most stories with a word limit, I have trouble staying within the limit. I probably could have extended the story out to double it's length if given the option. I loved weaving stories and creating worlds, so it's hard for me to be concise at times.

What message do you hope your story will tell your readers?

I didn't have anything specific in mind. I guess it was more just an idea of comfort and peace. That even in our final hours, there can be something beautiful to look forward to.

If you woke up in a time or place that was very different from reality, what would you do?

Panic. Then, after I calmed down, I'd probably try to get some information about where/when I was. I wouldn't be able to do anything until I knew at least that much.

If there was something you could learn (i.e., some spell, some martial arts, etc.) like the main character in your book, what would it be?

The light-hearted answer is: how to befriend a kitsune. However, in all honesty, I think I'd like to gain her acceptance. Both of death and the things we cannot change in this world. I think everyone struggles with these things a bit.

Would you rather go through a lifetime of never finding love or be willing to go through several lifetimes of hardships just to save your love? Why?

I'd go through several lifetimes of hardship. Love is an indescribable feeling. I think people who are okay with never finding it have never experienced real love. Not just romantic love, mind you. Love comes in many forms. But no matter if that form is friends, lovers, family, or anyone/anything else in your life, it is always beautiful. And always something worth saving.

What is your favorite creature from Asian mythology or folklore? Why?

"Creature" would probably be the kitsune. Aside from their beauty, they are also cunning, intelligent, playful and can play both the hero and the villain in a story depending on their role. Although, I also have a fascination with vengeful spirits, if they count as "creatures." Their origins, methods of revenge, purpose. Whenever I hear about one, I just can't help but want to know more.

What is your favorite Asian myth? Why?

For "myth" I like the legend of Tanabata because it is a beautiful love story. However, I also really enjoy a lot of legends about vengeful ghosts and spirits. For example, one of my favorite urban legends is the Kuchisake-onna (slit-mouthed woman). Urban legends of vengeful spirits are always the best combination of terrifying and intriguing. They make you want to know more.
