The Nadwe Progression

Okay so I said this last chapter but I every time I draw Nadwe I feel like I make massive improvement in my art so I'm here to show you the progression of the child (and my art style) over time, oldest to newest. Some of these were never posted, and some aren't even finished! Let's begin!

So we start on the 30th December, 2020. I just get my first drawing program (That I still use at times): FireAlpaca. I figured out the program and mostly drew cats for the first few months. Then on July 21st of 2021, I draw Nadwe for the first time.

O h  g o d. However, I actually don't hate the colors all that much. August 12th, 2021 is the next time I draw him. I figured out crappy shading, but haven't made any attempt to actually understand how anatomy works or even just how the collar of suits are actually supposed to look. Also, the hair is way too saturated and the background makes no sense (even though I remember it was supposed to be a floor and wall with shading coming from the right (Somehow???? Why isn't it on the child too????)).

August 18th, 2021. Hasn't gotten much better, but at least his eyes aren't just dots (although the previous one was a meme so that's acceptable). And it's the first full body shot! Ooh, and his hands actually make sense, even if he's missing a finger!

October 27th, 2021. A full character reference sheet. I have once again made the hair too saturated, even though I fixed it last time. But look at that! Our first iteration of Batwe!.. Wait. That's supposed to be a vampire??? WHAT??? BUT IT JUST LOOKS LIKE AVERAGE- Oh, never mind. *Large sigh of disappointment* (There will be a bonus chapter after this for all the other Batwes and Nads from the M&M book.)

Novermber 27th, 2021. I actually draw multiple Nadwes! However, one is a quick redraw of the meme from earlier (honestly, I like this one better because it doesn't try as hard and the anatomy is slightly more put together with a better understanding of facial expressions) and the other is actually the first child you guys have actually seen before! The art style makes a noticeable shift suddenly. Also, I start to only draw him with one hat. Finally, a noticeable change in the design!

December 27th, 2021. I never finished it an I never will. It doesn't feel like mine. It wasn't how I drew then and isn't how I draw now. However, for once, the anatomy makes a little more sense.

January 13th, 2022. It's a new year. I felt like trying to draw with a limited, randomly generated color pallet. Also, another style shift. Plus, I'm trying out a funky with the hair (that I likely will never do again). The expressions have gotten much more coherent. This is the first drawing of Nad to ever have colored line art/inking instead of just black. I was trying a lot of new things with this one.

Feburary 8th, 2022. The second drawing ever posted on here. I was trying to mess around and make a more comic-y looking drawing. There is simple shading, but that's all there needs to be with all the dots. I also was messing around with giving the line art/inking more weight instead of just using one size the entire time. I did this manually since at the time I was still drawing with a track pad of my laptop. Yes, the entire time so far. My finger. On a track pad. I'll let you know when that changes. Anyways, the line art/inking is also much less messy and the lines end where they're supposed to instead of cutting in or looking broken up/shaky, since I was paying so much attention to them.

March 18th, 2022. A simple 25 minute drawing. The third drawing to go in the book. It has shading (although it's technically lighting since they're highlights, right???) and is well put together for such a small amount of time. He's just a silly little man. :]

April 3rd, 2022. I vaguely traced the face shape off of someone else's drawing that I cannot find anymore, but that would literally just be the nose and neck, nothing else, I swear. The coloring and shading is mine, and well as the entire rest of the body, hair, eyes, hat, hand, and background. I am very impressed with it, however it is only detailed that way because I traced that first bit, therefor forcing myself into using a different art style. I am very proud of it, but I cannot say that I did it on my own, even if only three of the lines were initially traced.

May 6th, 2022. Nadwe's (and Tb's) birthday. I had quickly whipped something up to post for him, but I still took a couple of hours to do it. You can see the full image on chapter 52 (Nadwe and Tb's Birthday). It was the fourth drawing of Nad to go in this book.

June 13th, 2023. It's the next year. I had gotten bored and had realized that I hadn't drawn any of Sock Squad of a hot minute. So, since I was having fun with a new brush for the line art/inking and subsequently a new style, I went ahead and drew the child. By this point, I had started using a drawing tablet with an apple pen, as well as switching to ProCreate. Also, for the first time, he actually looks like a vampire. I've also started to put more detail into hair and clothes, giving them wrinkles and other things.

July 27th, 2023. 2 days ago as of posting this. I create an updated (from the previous drawing) full body character design of vampire Nad. Can you tell that I miss SockSMP? I made him even edgier and even quirkier because I can. This is also the official design for Nadwe in M&M (He gets little claws on his fingertips but I forgot. Oops.).

July 28, 2023. A day later, and also yesterday (as of posting this chapter. I decided I want to do a side view since all I ever draw are front facing and three quarters shots. And what better character to use than the child? Since it was only shoulders and up I gave a little more detail to the hair and earring. Also, since his mouth is open you can see he gets a pointy buck-tooth because I said so.

And that is the most recent Nadwe drawing. It took forever to gather these all up but I love them all a lot, even if some of them aren't the prettiest looking back. It shows my journey through drawing from the very beginning of digital art, and how I improved over three years time. If you keep drawing, you'll eventually find your art style(s) and will be very proud of yourself. It'll be fun to look back and see how far you've come. :)

(Bonus Chapter is coming in a moment with all the Batwes and M&M drawings as stated before).
