Like every other hero, he was built in the Assembly Tower. Different to the original story, heroes go through a TEST to get assorted into their teams.

Grant went through a test to go into the Alpha-team, because he knows that the Alpha-team is the most popular and also go through the most challenges. But he didn't make it. Instead, he got put into the Gamma-team, a team barely anyone knows about.

When he got into the Gamma-team, he found out that Surge took "his" place in the Alpha-team. You can probably imagine how jealous he was. Grant started to think that the test was unfair, because Surge was really clumsy during his test, and began to dislike the Alpha-team.

Y'all know how bullies have a reason to bully someone? Grant does it out of jealousy and anger.
