A raging storm just like the one he was born under tore the planks of the wood apart. The last thing he saw were his mother's beautiful diamond eyes plunging into the eternal blackness of the inky sea. He called out to her, just in time to be cut off by a million foot wave crashing upon him.

A gull pecked at his arm, and he woke with a gasp. There was hot sand under his back, and he gazed up to see the beach washed with ruminants from the wreck. Saltwater abraised his lungs as he doubled over to puke out all the sickness. As soon as he could, the seventeen year old boy leapt to his feet to search for any signs of life. There were none but one shattered bracelet that had belonged to his older sister.

He had lost his family that day, washed away to ever crevice of the cold world. Still, he mourned over each loss every day. Deep down he figured he would never see them again, which did indeed break his heart. He fashioned memorials out of old driftwood, etched with the name of each loved one. He promised himself to keep every good and bad memory locked in his mind until the day he falls.

He loved coming to those graves, stuck in the furthest part of the beach where no wave dare to halter. He kept a new piece of life on each marker everyday whether it be a shell, rock, or fresh flowers. His mother's was always dressed in all white, just as she was. His best memories were curled up in those endless waves of white, caressed by her lovely locks of snow.

It had been exactly two years since that day and the painful week that followed. He had just awoken, congratulating himself a quiet happy birthday under his breath, for today he turned 19. He decided to treat himself with some peaceful net fishing off the rocky shores, for the tastiest fish were always hanging about there.

He ran a hand through his hair, his shirt unbuttoned halfway, the white collar popped. He had fashioned this for himself out of coconut fibers, which he had weaved himself. His feet dangled off of the edge, lightly tapping the grey slate with the heels of his feet. His net was cast out and he waited patiently, gazing off into the sunrise as he did. A flood of past thoughts covered his mind, making him smile to himself.

He suddenly felt a sharp tug on his net, startling him for a moment. The fish around these parts weren't known for being very large so he was shocked. It thrashed ravigly and he struggled to even stake it down. He clammored down the side of the ledge, to gaze into the net and what it had captured. It looked to be a man, but there was a distinct flashing of scales. Then it hit him, a merfolk!
