When my eyelids opened up to dawn, I realized it was the first day of first grade. The sun glossed over me, highlighting my good parts such as my beak and eyes. My body had always been my weak spot, so it was hidden in the darkness. Excitement rushed over me since although going to the same school with the blues could be an issue, I was the only one in first grade while they were younger than I! Chicky was a grade above me, but either way, that could only mean one thing: I would meet tons of new classmates.

It would be nice if they didn't treat me rudely.

"Wait, I have Mom and Bing Bing as my teachers?" Maggie queried in a stupefied tone and shouted with a smile.

Due to my real parents not teaching me at school, it was definitely going to be interesting.

Maggie's favorite breakfast mix consisted of  eggs, crunchy crackers, and apples. Soon, the air filled with the sweet and salty smell I had  always enjoyed, the smell that Chicky would correlate well with due to her well-thought-out come backs. Although I only had crackers, the air was enough to fill my stomach for a little while. They were salty, so my tears from the day before wouldn't find their way out of my body again.

Salty plus salty equals salty. Salty plus everything but that equals something else. Math.

Maggie exclaimed like I was invisible, "This year will be the best of the best!"

Maybe not for me but for you.

My stomach began to ache out of nowhere, but it could be due to the hate thrown in boulders at me.

"It's time to go to school, so pack your bags!" "Mom" exclaimed. "Oh, Maggie, I packed your lunch in the fridge. You just need to put your water bottle and lunch in your bag as I already have other items in there."

She grabbed her bag and flew out the door; my bag was three times smaller than hers. Good thing my body intake was diminutive as well, so it didn't bother me much. However, this was for consideration in the future.

Know-it-all, store what happened.

When we reached a tan building with many doors and windows and a  golden bird statue, mom announced, "We're here!"

For a second, I didn't believe her, but everyone got out of the car of doom and walked or flew into the school of doom.

Know-it-all: Doom, doom, doom.

"Chicky, is this the only option we have?" I whispered into her ear, catching up to her with my stubby legs.

She hesitated but still nodded.

It's definitely a bird school.

"Let's see how it goes, and we'll take it from there," she added.

There wasn't any representation of chicks, which ruined the vibe I was going for for the day, but not all birds were mean, right?

Do not tell me they're making us go silent.

The walls seemed sturdy, but it somehow made me feel uncomfortable. I was not claustrophobic, but it looked like a physical division, not just a mental one. My biggest fear was the division of the world, and this was the most significant one yet. I may not know most organisms though it should be feared and taken care of before something dreadful happened.

They all went in one direction, but I just thought they were lost.

"Are you lost?" a crow asked, contrary to my belief.

I told him I was and mentioned my grade level to which he showed me my classroom. It left me stunned, and my breathing malfunctioned. Yes, I was with Chicky but the blues, Bing Bing, the blues' oldest sister, and "mom" were there as well!

I could not take my eyes off of what the black ink said on the whiteboard: Pre-test today! All you need is a pencil.

Not a good start for sure!

My respiration rate fluctuated from the normal thirty to high forty breaths per minute.

Know-it-all: Congratulations! For the first time, you got that number correct! Your sister taught you right!

Me: Don't remind me.

As much as I appreciated compliments, the last sentence truly caught me off the hook.

Traumatizing...plan...

Going back on topic, I remembered playing all day at my old school. Hopefully I would not fail too badly.

"Good morning, everyone! There is a pre-test for all of you that will have different questions based on your grade level. However, let me introduce something new to you guys!" Mrs. Bing Bong said while holding up a jar of blue circles. "In this jar, you will find blue candies, and they can only be earned if you students pass any test or if anyone shows respect and  concentration. There is only one rule here: you can't talk when the teacher is speaking or when you're taking a test."

Hey, it's not my fault that I didn't know those blue things are candies...they're literally circles.

Know-it-all: 'Cause you're dumb

Please don't turn into internal Maggie on me. Don't betray me.

Bing Bong...ding dong...

Know-it-all: Don't you dare make fun of her. You'll face mad consequences.

Chicky and I learned that, so it clicked in automatically.

If only the blues can as well...That would complete emotional and social health, along with my entire life. Freedom and justice in this unfamiliar bird universe. Please, whoever is listening to me right now, make that happen.

I nodded in agreement with everyone else, and Mrs. Bing Bong handed us the test materials.

At least I was prepared to some extent with my pencil I hide in my favorite group of feathers.

One eccentric habit of mine every day was to find a beautiful patch of them, which were usually thick, and stuff a pencil in there in case I ever needed it in an emergency like this. At the time, it seemed asinine but not anymore. I never knew I'd be in such a situation with birds; I couldn't process the fact that I used to think everyone was caring to everyone else.

A/N:

I just realized that all of my stories include a chapter about school...If you had the option, would you guys be willing to go to a school where your family members are all at or with other people? There are pros and cons for each...

What do you guys think about this story part?
