The point of using the Urban genre to show off social problems and the pain of prejudice and marginalisation is not to illicit pity or sympathy for the characters. The point is to demonstrate the layers complex problems have and to show the grey area that millions of people live in. In the final analysis, we're all humans with problems.  It's how well we deal with them (or not) that makes all the difference.
