Sanskar returned to Swara's house,whristling as he went up by the walkway.

Boarding up the building had taken longer than expected.The teens had broken up in the double doors,& the impact of the crash caused structural damage to one wall.He'd had to call one of his emoloyees who lived nearby to help him.

He ran up the steps & took out his phone to call Swara to let him in when he noted the plastic bag near the door.He picked it up & dialed her number.
Sanskar-Hi,I'm outside& so are ur groceries.
You're too young to be this forgetful already.😜
Swara-I'll be right there.
Hearing the sullen tone of voice,he became instantly alert.
Saskar-Whats the matter.
Swara-Nothing,I'm coming down to get u.

Moments later,Swara let him into the dark entryway.Seeing her sharply fomed outlined benath beneath the silk robe should have caught his attention,& spiked his lidebo,but bit didn't.
What caught her attention was her lack of response to his arrival & how she avoided looking at him.
Swara-Thanks (said in a hoarse voice).
She reached for the bag,still keeping her eyes averted & using her hair as a cover.
Sanskar-What's wrong?
Swara-I said nothing.
Sanskar flipped the switch on the wall.She squinted against the bright light & covered her face.

Sanskar-Look at me.
He dropped the bag on the side table & took her chin in his hand.
Sanskar-You've been crying (noting her reddened eyes)
Swara pulled away from him.
Swara-I'm fine.
Sanskar-You're not.What happened b/w the time I left & now?I thought we were good.

Backing away even more,she crossed her arms over her waist.Neither of them spoke as they looked at each other.Sanskar didn't know why she was behaving this way,but it pained him to watch her distance herself from him.
Swara-This isn't normal.
He doesn't have to ask her to explain.
She meant their relationship.
Sanskar-Says who?
Swara-I want normal.
Sanskar-No,u don't.Normal is boring.Tjis is way more exciting.😉
She gave a humorless laugh.
Swara-U have an answer for everything.
Sanskar-I wish I did.Then I'd know what to say to put your mind at ease.
He moved to reach out to her,but she tightened her arms around herself.

She blinked rapidly & gazed up at the ceiling b4 looking at him again.
Swara-In London,I suspected that you'd lied to me.
He frowned.
Sanskar-What r u talking about?
Swara-I suspected that u might be involved with someone.
Sanskar-How?
Swara-I just did.That first night at the restaurant,when I asked u if u had a gf,I suspected u weren't completely honest.I wondered if u were lying to me when u said your brother called the next morning,too.I could have asked u more questions,but I was afraid to know the answers.
Sanskar-I remembered the look in your eyes when u saw me with Kavi.U have no idea how much it killed me to know I caused that pain.
He ran his fingers through her hair.
The hurt he'd caused her had lashed his conscience.
Sanskar-I thought we agreed to keep the past in the past.6 yrs ago doesn't matter.We're starting fresh,here now.No distractions.

It's true they'd agreed to that,but the confrontation with Sahil had left her shaken & ashamed.She continued speaking as if he hadn't said anything.
Swara-When I saw u with her,I felt so used.Like I was nothing to u.
Sanskar-You weren't nothing.
Swara-Being with u like that was the only time in my entire life that I had ever done anything remotely spountaneous.The one time I threw cautioned to the wind,I ended up on the wrong side of the love triangle.

She took a deep breath.
Swara-It's not that I don't believe you care about me.I'm past that & I do believe u.You've shown me that u do.But I'm afraid all this passion & intensity will fade & then you'll realize that u made a mistake.What if u meet someone else that way u meet me?Then u won't need me anymore,& I'll be alone with this ache inside of me that won't go away.So how do I know that won't happen again?How do u know?

He looked at her as if she was crazy.

He said the sentence in such a way that the question "How could u even ask me that?" was implied.No hesitation on his part,no awkwardness.The words sounded natural,as if it had always been-never mentioned,but understood.

He came closer.
Sanskar-I think I fell in love with u the moment u smiled at me as we walked down the sea.My feelings for u r real.I've never been surer of anything in my life.It doesn't matter to me that we've only had a few days together bcoz u make me happy like no one else.I've never loved anyone the way I love u,& I know I never will again.

She inhaled,suddenly aware that she'd been holding her breath for the latter part of his speech.Only now did she realize she'd been waiting for him to say those words--had "needed" to hear him say them.

He took one of her hand in his & drew her in,their faces close together.

Swara-You're right,what's b/w us isn't normal.It's better than normal.We can't do normal.We have to do "us".

Her fingers stroked his jaw.

SANSKAR SAT in his car,outside Swara's building.At the moment she & her staff worked at her boutique,doing inventory & preparing for a weekend event where a local designer with a name he couldn't pronounce would arrive to promote pieces from her line.

Swara expected members of the media to be in attendance,& her best clients would go to the store early to rub elbows with the designer & get previews of the full collection.He'd promised to go by later & helped her with anything she needed,even if only to move furniture around.He had to take care of this one little things first,& was the perfect time to do it while sge was occupied at the store.

Last night,he'd cupped the back of her head & felt a bump there,& that's when she'd told him the details of what happened b/w her & Sahil.He'd been furious.At Sahil,& even at himself for not fixing that damn deadbolt like he'd planned to.He'd been ready to go next door to Sahil's townhouse,but she'd begged him not to go.
Swara-It's not worth it.I'm fine.
She said holding onto him when he'd charged toward the door.
Swara-Come upstairs with me.Wouldn't u rather do that then go over there & confront him?
When he didn't respond,she continued...
Swara-Plz,let it go.For me?Don't do anything stupid.

He'd responded that he wouldn't,& he hadn't exactly lied to her.Yes,he'd promised not to do anything stupid,but this wasn't stupid.This was the logical result of someone putting their hands on the woman he loved & causing her physical & emotional pain.He couldn't let Sahil get away with what he'd done.

When the black BMW rolled by,he watched its progress in the rearview mirror.Sahil had arrived.

Sanskar exited the car.When he'd arrived earlier,he'd loosen the bulb on Sahil's porch,darkening it in heavy shadows.Moving quickly & quitely,he was up on Sahil's porch b4 the man even knew he follwed him.By then it was too late.

He began to turn,but Sanskar twisted his arms behind his back.& grabbed his neck,shoving his face into the door.
Sahil began to sputter & shake.
Sahil-Who--What--
Sanskar-Be quiet.
Sahil-Sanskar?
Sanskar-That's right.
Sahil-What the hell?
Sanskar-Stop moving or I'll break your arm.

A tremor passed through Sahil & he closed his eyes.
Sanskar-Open your eyes.
He flicked them back open & Sanskar's voice hardened with the effort it took to keep himself in check.
Sanskar-We Kolkata boys don't like it when someone threatens our women.
Sahil-I didn't treaten--
Sanskar-Shut up.
Sanskar pulled Sahil's arm higher up his back & heard him whimper.
Sanskar-You may not have come right out & said the words,but u most certainly threatened her when u sneaked up on her in the dark the way u did.Kind of like what I did to u.Do u feel threatened?
When he didn't answer,Sanskar repeated the question louder & squeezed his neck.
Sanskar-Do u feel threatened?
Sahil-Yes,yes.Yes,I do.
Sanskar loosened his grip of Sahil's neck enough so that his cheeck no longer pressed into the door,but he kept his arm in the same awkward position.
Sanskar-Here's what's going to happen.You're going to leave Swara alone.Don't speak to her.Don't even look in her direction again.Do u understand?
Sahil-Do u realize I could get u arrested?I'm an attroney.I could sue u,destroy ur reputation--anything.I choose.

Sanskar had to hand it to Sahil;he had balls.
Sanskar-I don't care what ur profession is.Matter of fact,I happen to know a really good attroney,too.U may have heard him--Gabe Benson,ur boss.Turns out,we have a lot in common.I wonder what he'd think about your behavior,considering you've been probably kissing his ass for years trying to move up in his firm.

Sahil's lips tightened,& he remained silent.
Sanskar-So let me ask u using lawyer-speak so there's no confusion.
Do u understand the terms under which you're to perform in your revised relationship with Swara?
Sahil-Yes.
Sanskar-Luck for u that college educated brain of yours kicked in & helped u make the right decision.
Sanskar patted him on the back in a condescending manner.
Sahil-I'm glad we understand each other.Next time I'll pick on someone your own size.

Sanskar turned away,but his instincts warned him what kind of man Sahil would be,& he was right.He'd hoped Sahil would take a shot at him so he'd have an excuse yo hit him.
As the other man swung,he dodged.Moving quickly,Sanskar landed a right hook that jerked Sahil's head back.He staggered backward & Sanskar followed,landing a left jab to his midsection & another blow to the face that sent him crashing into the wall.
He slid to the floor in a daze,blood trickling from his left nostril.
Sanskar-Come on (said pacing restlessly)

The look of worry ebbed from her features.Her eyes softened.
Swara-What am I going to do with u?
Sanskar-Keep me.
She bit her bottom lip.
Swara-Did u get him good?
He chuckled.
Sanskar-Yeah
Her face broadened into a grin.
Swara-Good.
Sanskar looked around.
Sanskar-All right,what do u need me to do?
Halfway turning away from her assess the work that needed to be done.

Swara took his arm & pulled him back around to face her.She rose up onto her toes & kissed him lightly on the mouth.😘
Swara-Thank u.
Her staff whistled & made kissing noises.😃😂😉
Swara-Get back to work.
When they did,she kissed him again.
