Leo was in agony.

Pain wracked his body every time he even twitched his leg, but he tried to pretend he was ok when Piper ran over to help him up. He was was still attempting to be positive, but the truth was this: he didn't stand a chance against Polybotes.

Percy had woken up, and was now whimpering softly, face pressed into Annabeth's chest, who held him tightly. Leo had never seen Percy so weak, maybe except for straight after he and Annabeth had been saved from Tartarus.

Leo wanted to cry. Both he and Percy were out of action, while Annabeth was on comforting duty and Piper, the only one up and ready to fight, looked tiny standing before the giant, her knife a toothpick.

Leo let out a groan as Polybotes laughed, his teeth mossy and crumbling.

"Aww, look at the little demigods. They wouldn't stand a chance against me. Such a shame I'm not killing today!" His great, booming voice echoed eerily throughout the cave.

"Wait... what do you mean, you're not killing today? Why not? You've got us here now, you may as well!" Annabeth yelled, and Leo was astounded by how quickly she'd given up. She was so negative after Tartarus.

"Though I want to kill you, especially that silly little sea spawn-" Percy hugged his face further into Annabeth, cheeks tinged slightly green. "- I cannot. I have strict orders from Gaia. I do like them, though!"

With that, the giant sprung forward, and picked a struggling Piper up easily. She hung in his fingers helplessly, face pale and knife dropped far beneath her.

"Piper! No!" Leo screeched, and he attempted to blast a fireball... but there was only a pathetic sizzling noise and a tiny spark bursting into the air and flickering into non-existence.

Polybotes grinned, and held out his hand in a grand way, as though expecting applouse. "Ha! You're all rubbish! Now, look at my new magic trick!"

Leo saw Percy look up, trembling, just as Polybotes waved his arm and a gigantic black pit open up on the floor of the cavern.

An entrance to Tartarus, Leo knew immediately, before realising Piper was being dangled helplessly above it. "Oh my gods..." He muttered quietly to himself. Then, despite the horrible, horrible pain, he began to crawl over to the edge of the pit.

"Leo, no! Stop!" He heard Annabeth shout desperately to him, but he didn't. He wanted to help Piper.

"Say goodbye to your stupid Daughter of Aphrodite!" Polybotes mocked... and he let go of her squirming body. Leo could only watch helplessly as Piper fell down, down, down, screaming.

Tears fell down Leo's cheeks as he screamed out; a scream of pure emotion, anger and sadness. He, agonizingly slowly, crawled to the edge of the hole, looking for any way, any way at all, that could help his best friend.

"Be careful, Leo! Get away!" He heard Percy gasp, voice croaky. "Please don't-"

The son of Poseidon was interrupted as the ceiling exploded. A huge piece of rock bashed into Leo's head, and he screamed as he lost balance. He only just caught a ledge.

Yup. Definite concussion... he thought groggily, before he lost his grip on the small rocky handhold.

The last thing he remembered was a boy's yell, and falling down into a deep, black pit.

AN
Don't panic (no not yet... sorry, couldn't resist! XD)  I'm confused too! Quick explanation: Piper in Tartarus, Leo upset, ceiling explodes, Leo falls into Tartarus.
